Considering classic films such as Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, Platoon, Psycho, E.T., The Godfather, Forrest Gump, etc. blah blah blah(opinions may vary)
It seems the latest to have such impact on the world was James Cameron's Avatar. What is the next powerful movie in the works?

I know why you're laughing, but Avatar did make HUGE jumps in 3D technology for movies. So technically (as in actual, technical moviemaking) it will be looked upon with some improtance historically IMO.

You laugh, but you can thank Avatar for the 3D revival in theaters.

I'm not exactly grouping Avatar with the classics. It's more trying to showcase the advances and impact it made on filmography today. Seems we are lacking as of late.

Avatar's story sucked blue monkey dick, but in terms of 3D it was phenomenal.

Well he didn't specify between "Technical" advances, which is a completely different set of movies than those mentioned. He said, "Classic" films and listed a bunch of really great movies. So there's that.
It's not like E.T. was a great technical achievement, or even technically innovative. It's just a fantastic story and movie.
No one has used Avatar's methods since. "3D" yes, but not the way Avatar was crafted.
We have a long time to wait before that's true...because...
There's maybe 1 film a year that is ACTUALLY filmed in 3D. TDKR a couple of years ago. Gravity this year.
3D is either done in processing (animated films) or post-processing (everything else). 3D adds very little to a film and only served to raise ticket prices on consumers.
So the "innovation" of Avatar is currently just a ticket price hike.
IMO, 3D doesn't take off until it's glassless.

Most 3-D is still retro fitted crap.

This is a mish-mash of films, perhaps you need a more focused premise? "Classic" could be the wrong word?
Platoon isn't really important to anyone. The influence of a Psycho and a Gone with the Wind are different. ET cemented the idea of family blockbusters, etc.
If we're talking "Innovative," or "Technically Impressive" films, I might agree on Avatar, but even then, there were more important science fiction films before and more important science fiction films after.
Heck, I might even argue that something like District 9 has had a more immediate and important impact on film than Avatar did. Longer argument, but it's there.
I mean, name one film right now that wouldn't exist without Avatar.

Not to mention the fact that the 3-D money grab revival was well on its way before Avatar.

Right...so far. But they will IMO. That's what I mean...Avatar advanced the tech by miles. So even though studios tried to "retrofit" 3D to already-filmed movies, that doesn't mean the technology won't have an affect on the technical aspect of moviemaking.

Right. That's why I said that it will eventually be looked back on with some importance in regards to the technology.

Fine. So right now it's not only at least one per year, but those are actually some of teh better movies that came out in their respective year...and Gravity, for example, was so good mainly BECAUSE of the 3D technology. It's one of the most gorgeous movies I've ever seen because of that.

I don't think it's had it's impact quite yet. Give it some time and it'll take it's toll.

Of course not. But to act like his tech didn't have an affect on 3D is ignoring the obvious IMO.

Something can't be ground breaking when no ground is broken.
3-D existed before Avatar. Good 3-D existed before Avatar.
Movies used 3-D before Avatar. Most movies continue to use crappy 3-D after Avatar.
I don't see anything to make Avatar a classic film or groundbreaking.
Extending an already used technology isn't groundbreaking.

I think we may be missing the question of the post. What future films will make a global impact and will be talked about for generations to come?

You forgot "Grandma's Boy".

They invented a new kind of camera for filming with green screens. I would guess that's been used a lot since Avatar. That's probably a more significant technological achievement than 3D they used.
