My late grandmother was a very heavy smoker from the time I was a little kid until about middle school. I used to hate riding in the car with her because the ashtray was stuffed with cig and ashes and the car stunk. She had a friend die which apparently scared the crap out of her because she went from about 2 or 3 packs a day to nothing. She quit cold turkey in her 60s and lived until her early 80s.
My mom is the only smoker in our family. Despite my grandfather (her dad) dying from emphysema in his early 60s, she still can't kick the habit.
