Don't be a dipshit. The word is offensive. The dictionary says that the word is offensive. I am correct in saying that. The dictionary proves me to be correct. Third Leg posted such evidence a page or two ago. And you're fighting tooth and nail for this.

Offensive does not equal racist. We're talking about two different definitions.

So prove it and let it go.

You completely missed the point. People are attached to the word because it's the name of the team. They don't care or even think about the "meaning" of the word, because it's lost it's meaning long ago. It's their team's identity.

Like the Los Angeles Lakers. If the Lakers decided to change the name of the team, the fans would have a fit. Not because they care about lakes. And the name doesn't even make sense for Los Angeles. But the name is their identity. Their team is the Lakers. That's the team.

I don't know the origin of the word. It might have been a perfectly acceptable term back when the team was formed for all I know.

I think people are just weary of applying modern, hipster-progressivism to old things that have achieved independent significance.

People fighting 50 year old war monuments because it's in the shape of a cross, people arguing that westerns with anti-Indian overtones are offensive, people trying to change definitions of marriage or genders, people trying to change the name of old sports teams, etc.

It's just a dumb and cumbersome waste of time.

That's a good way of putting it. "Independent significance".

This statement describes virtually all public discourse, as framed by privately owned and controlled media.

What if they just changed the name to the Dirty Scalping Savages? That doesn't apply really to any one group

I have found very little evidence that the origin of the term Redskin refers to this.

The way I see it Dan Snyder has a couple of moves:

1. Move the team to Talledega and keep the name redskins (except I would change the mascot to resemble Hank Hill with a really bad sunburn)

2. Move the team to Boise and again keep the name redskins. The mascot would be a big fricking red potato (add in some corn stalks if I really want to be a dick)

If I had Snyders resources, I would consider doing either as a big frick you to all involved (but the fricking redskin moniker would remain).

This is one of the most idiotic non issues out there. My thing is why is it just now offensive? Has the team had this brought up in past decades or when they were created?

The NFL should give a big to lawmakers by calling them the Washington Senators with a logo of a congressman running around with bags of money like a reverse Robin Hood.

I like Snyders response which was basically "This shite again? Go frick yourselves."

No one is saying that offensive and racist are the same thing, though "redskin" is a racial slur that is defined by current American dictionaries as "offensive," "disparaging," and "insulting."

I knew I should have bought a Redskins cap when I had the chance. Washington Black Bears has a nice ring to it.
