Does AT&T refund the $200 you pay for a micro cell to improve service?

Had to get a micro cell to improve cell phone service in my new home. Since I got it my signal has gone from 0 and 1 bar to 5 bars. The folks at the AT&T store charged $200 for it. I don't understand why I have to pay for the micro cell myself when they want me to connect it to my internet service to make phone calls from a phone that I already pay for monthly...just because their service sucks. I have been with AT&T for almost 9 years now. Any chance I could call them and get a credit for this thing?

Probably should have started with this argument and not paid in the first place...

The guy at the store wouldn't give it to me unless I paid the full $200 for it. He said they are not authorized to give it for free or for a discount. He said my only option was to buy it, try it for 14 days (free return period), and if it works to call AT&T customer service and see if I could talk them into giving a credit for it.

You sound like a sucker.

Why would you expect them to give it you for free?

Because he is paying for a service, but that service is sub-par?

i've heard of them providing them many times to offset bad indoor coverage
its better than losing you as a customer

Yeah, they gave my brother in law one when he complained about service.

Yeah, especially if it's only $200, a couple months of service.
I don't get why Brett here is so willing to give up all of his power as a consumer and just pay for it.

Not saying I wouldn't try to get it for free, just saying looking at it from the company perspective, why would they give it to just you for free? If they hear about bad coverage I'm sure they'd look into putting a tower there. But otherwise they'd just be handing out small cells like candy to anyone with bad coverage. Obviously you can't do that

quote:You mean "obviously they should do that", right? AT&T sells 2 things: cell service and customer service. Charging customers for devices that allow them to use their cell service is a total failure at both. This is not a phone where the customer chooses his device and pays for it. This is a device that makes up for the shortcomings of the service AT&T actually sells. This should absolutely 100% be paid for by AT&T. No customer should have to subsidize AT&T's network coverage... that's what your monthly bill is supposed to pay for already.

I got one for free from them. Just bitch and tell them long time customer I spend x dollars every month with you guys, etc. My friend did same. If you've already paid you can work a refund/credit I'm sure.

quote:FWIW this is a big reason they gave mine for free. She looked at my neighborhood and said there were several other houses with the microcell so she knows there an issue in my area. (However, its only inside my house which is bizarre). I can step on my front porch or driveway and have 4 bars. Inside my house 1 bar or sometimes none.

It's not really bizarre. Lots of building materials interfere with signals, not to mention the wiring in your walls and possible interference from appliances and such.

Why is it AT&T's fault that the signal doesn't work in your house? Does the service work out side your door? If so, Im glad the microcell helps but its not AT&T's fault. I mean some people build houses out of wood, bricks, concrete, multi-story, bunkers, etc. Those cell phone signals don't penetrate various structures as well as others. We cant expect them to put a tower outside everyone's door.
Just saying.

No, but I would certainly expect them to cover the cost of the micro cell if you mention that you're going to see what kind of service you get inside your house with Verizon. It's pretty apparent from some of the posts in this thread that they are more than willing to do it, too. It is a very small price for them to pay to keep you as a customer.

They gave me one for free and I didn't even need it. It's still in the box on my shelf. I need to eBay it.

This. I did the same thing: called customer service and complained about the crappy service at my new place. They sent me one free and even next-day-air'ed it to me. I get full bars throughout my place now with no missed or dropped calls. Only thing that sucks is that it takes several minutes to text pictures.

I have one of those things collecting dust in my house. I ended up switching to verizon due to bad cell coverage in my area.

Imagine that.
This is why I don't go to a store or talk to anybody in person if I don't have to. I'll waste their time while I'm making a long drive or something.
