Get off your knees because you are blowing the game.

I'm not sure what the mechanics of officiating basketball are or if there are any, but assuming there are mechanics involved you always want to look like you know what the hell you're doing. Sell the shite it out of your calls because it's a lot harder to question them if you that.

This. You need to give the appearance that you are 100 percent confident and in complete control of the situation. At the same time, you want to be pretty invisible until you need to make a call. No one came to see you, so keep the light on the kids. As you get experience, you'll figure out more how to control the flow of the game, which is so important in kids sports. You have to know what calls to make and what calls to let slide.

Did you have a partner for the game? Every time you work with someome, ask them after to give you an honest evaluation. You will learn a lot that way. The vast majority of officials are quite eager to help out the new guys, since there are so few of them.

Absolute Indisputable Rules:
1) ALWAYS watch and reff the defense first
2) call what you see, see what you call, dont anticipate anything
3) Know your primary area and keep your eyes in it, NO BALL WATCHING
4) NEVER EVER wear pants with a belt on the court

Good habits:
1) always try to stand stand up straight, dont slouch or bend over, it looks bad
2) ABM: Always Be Moving, if you stand still your eyes can get lazy and that makes your focus lazy
3) make a call, get the ball in play and keep the game moving
4) when you go to the table to report, slow down, make eye contact with the official scorer and make sure you are clear
5) when you blow your whistle, your arm goes straight up, dont be the guy who cocks his arm and tries to show off his bicep, it looks terrible

good things to remember:
1) the worse the game, the harder you work. bad game + lazy reffs =something bad will happen
2) nobody paid their money to see you work
3) leave the coaches alone, they arent your friend and they dont care what you think
4) if you need to conference with your fellow reff over your call and you come to a decision YOU make the signal, don't let him/her make the signal on your whistle, it will look like they over ruled you
5) Practice making your signals in the mirror and pay attention to how you look. As soon as you blow your whistle all eyes are on you so make us believe you know what you are doing
6) run to get in position to get a look, dont run like someone is chasing you
7) a late whistle that is right is better than no whistle that is wrong
8) get one those shirt tuck things that keeps your shirt down
9) OOBs on your line: if you didnt see it, but you had to blow your whistle, keep your open hand straight up, look at your partner andask for your help with your expression. If he didnt see it either, make a decision and SELL IT
10) ignore the crowd at all times, if you cant ignore someone any more always talk to game management first. If they dont handle the fan, THEN you throw the fan out. Give game management a chance to do their job otherwise you will have some explaining to do.

Pretty good stuff supa

A quote that stuck with me for this was: "Let your mind digest what your eyes have seen." In other words, don't anticipate a call.

Also, don't take crticisms personally. If you are being evaluated, that is a good opportunity to learn (keep an open mind). And like supah said, ignore the crowd and my rule of thumb on talking to coaches: If it is not a question, there's no need to respond (unless you're administering a call - timeout/technical, etc).

I might be imagining this, but do you feel the referees in the NBA finals (if you'er watching) are delaying their whistle intentionally, especially under the basket.

I feel like there are a lot of late whistles on what tend to be good calls, but they are letting the play happen and see it for themselves rather than anticipate.

I understand the hate for delayed calls, but it think it's much more advantageous to have a ref call late fouls rather than anticipate.

Is there a movement of this within the game of basketball? Or am I just imagining it(totally possible)?

Interesting
The NBA Finals are supposed to be worked by the best of the best. I think these guys are slow to blow the whistle at times because they want to let the players play. which can lead to some really ugly plays that probably deserve a whistle but don't get one.

Advantage/Disadvantage with guys that big and strong and athletic is no easy thing to discern

I agree to an extent. Basketball is one of if not the most difficult sport to officiant IMO because everything is such a judgement call about how much contact is a foul. Consistency is very difficult.

I think refs should err on making a call late rather than anticipating a foul on the way up and there is very little contact.

Yep. I've done both and every call is bitched about in basketball.

That's the truth. I've only been in one pick up game where the intramural refs were practicing. I immediately started bitching when I had fouls called on me. It's just natural.

I used to work with this young guy and he would sprint up the court like he was trying to beat Deion Sanders to the pylon. I asked him why did he do that and he said he thought if he got there faster he could rest more

so all he did was sprint up and down the court like his arse was on fire all game long.
