Cracked dash: no care
But seriously, I like that they're putting a diesel in a half ton. Hope the other bigs follow.

I like the idea but I think that the 3.0 is too small. It makes less HP and ties the TQ of the current Ecoboost. The next gen Ecoboost will cost significantly less than the 3.0, make much more power (stock), gas cost less, cheaper oil changes, etc.
Now, the Cummins 5.0 that Nissan and Toyota will be using
Around 500 HP and 500 TQ. I imagine this engine will get the same MPG as the 3.0 too.
Sorry that this contributed nothing to this thread.

Your only 150 HP off on the cummins v8

Only because you put the laughing face, it's you're, not your.
Either way, why would you want a 3.0 diesel when there are so many better current options and many more on the way?
Oh btw, how do you know I am so far off? Have they released the official numbers yet or are you using speculation like everyone else?

Ehhhhhhhhhh
It's a good motor that's been around Europe for a while. Pretty good performance for a small diesel.
I personally would not buy one. The ford ecoboost is a nicer truck that will end up being cheaper to own over the life of the vehicle.
Now when the nissan frontier comes out with the small cummins and chevy cuts the colorado with the small duramax, the game will change. Half ton diesels are going the wrong direction. The engines are too big to accomplish what they're looking to do. The small trucks are going to be some very capable tow vehicles with good MPG numbers. Wait for the nissan......

I highly doubt they would out do the current diesels by almost 100hp that they have in the 2500's.

HP isn't typically the strong point of any diesel motor.
OP: I haven't seen very many reviews on them yet. As mentioned, that motor has been around Europe for a little while now with overall good results. I'd go check some forums like Dodgetalk or Ramforumz, can probably find some reviews from owners there...all anyone will tell you here is that Dodge/Ram sucks and you should buy a Ford anyway.

It's a real good motor and Dodge deserves props for putting it out there.
Shitty thing is you get that motor with a dodge wrapped around it. Dodge will never overcome their rep of cracked dashboards and blown transmissions no matter how good they are and how good the warranty is.

No doubt. I can think of 3 gas engines that are more powerful (tq) than the 3.0 and cost a fraction of the small diesel.
GM 6.2 (460tq)
Ford 6.2 (434tq), 3.5 (420tq, increase in 2015)
They all cost less and can tow more.
Not a good debut for a modern diesel in a 1/2 ton.

It was a good engine before being saddled with the EPA mandated junk. Now you have a small diesel with a 2.5 gallon oil sump that only does 10k OCI's on full synthetic. Nope. Whole lot of nope.

I have that engine in the Grand Cherokee. So far, so good.
Very surprising as far as pick up is concerned. It definitely lives up to the MPG as advertised, if not better in some cases.
Why did I buy it? The factory warranty was hard to pass up. I did my homework on it, and it seems super reliable overseas.

The EPA stuff isn't all that bad anymore since they got SCR figured out. I definitely wouldn't let that be the deal breaker.

Eh, I don't buy that. They'll never beat out GM or Ford in yearly sales, but monthly sales and overall market share gain says they are getting past their old faults just fine.

They also all get nearly half the fuel mileage and the V8's make similar tq numbers but way higher in the RPM range.
For "not a great debut", it's been selling quite well so the demand is obviously there.

I to would have liked to have seen a 1/2 ton diesel with a little more power, but I have to give props to dodge for taking the risk. I think Ram has really but some serious money in their brand and are producing the nicest truck on the market today. The one issue Ram will have to overcome is if it will be a quality truck 7/8/9 years down the road.
But as stated it will get interesting once the small truck market gets diesel engines that will be the area where you see the most bang for your buck I think.

Have been on the inside of a new ram? They are just as nice if not nicer than what the Ford has to offer. Have you driven one? They are the best riding 1/2 ton on the market today. They are doing things that the other 2 makers are not...Like a 1/2 ton diesel option, like an adjustable air ride suspension.
But like i said will the truck they build today still be a quality truck down the road. I think they will be only time will tell.

Driving a ram rental right now. Other than the shitty dial shifter, it's nice.

To be honest with you, I don't think any decked out truck built today will be quality 10+ years down the road. People tend not to hang onto their vehicles as long and trucks are getting over complicated.

Probably alot of truth in that statement...with the computers and electronics these trucks have in them today I could easily see issues with all the makers down the road. Would be like a phone / computer company not providing support for that type of software any longer. Almost forcing you to upgrade.
