It's just a dog.

Those 2 items might be worth a shot. I think if I could get her to get some legit exercise in at least every other day, it would decrease her being so crazy inside all the time.

She also barks at any little sound outside or if people knock on the door. She will growl at new people. I really dropped the ball on training her when she was a puppy and I feel extra guilt that it's my fault she acts like this.

By the way, she's a Maltese / Shih Tzu mix

Meh. That's just her being a dog. Your kid will learn to deal with it.

It's actually more weird that you have a shedding issue with a dog like this. They're both on the hypoallergenic list as dogs for people with allergies.

Also, she is kind of dumb. We put her outside to use the bathroom and run around in the morning and afternoon/evenings. If we're not out there with her, she won't even go pee much less stay out there and play. She immediately follows us back inside. If we force her to stay outside, she might run and pee and come back to the door and scratch like crazy.

Sounds like she's either anxious you'll leave her or wants to be around you. My dog is pretty unsettled unless he knows you're just hanging out. Once we settle in to watch tv or something, then he'll go roam around. If we're up and moving he's right there with us.

In my opinion, children, elderly and a major move are the only valid reasons to get rid of a dog.

If you can find an owner who can devote more attention to her, and you trust them, I think it is fine. If you go drop it off at a shelter, then you're scum.
this is my stance

That was one of the reasons I got her due to my wife's allergies. The vet can't figure out exactly what she is so we're still going with that mix.

Here she is

Jk, but really, no harm in giving the dog up.

Giving away your pet is never a bad thing if they go to a good home and it makes your life easier, especially if the new owners can devote more time/care than you. Sometimes things just happen that make it less practical to have a pet, and if your pet's life is improved by having someone else take care of it, so be it.

brought her to Petco for training (I know, not the best but thought if I could calm her down just a bit, we'd be ok) but she refused to take treats at the class so they basically said they couldn't do anything for her.

This is why you don't go to Petco for training.

If you really want to train her, find a good place that isn't in a commercial pet store.

Rehoming isn't a bad thing if done for the well being of the pet. It sounds like you are looking out for your dog as much as you are your family. If it comes to this, find her a good home and know you did the right thing.

Xanax. Yes, they do prescribe Xanax to dogs.

What am I supposed to tell the vet for Xanax, she likes to play? I couldn't do that to her.

Although when she's tired and lays at the foot of the chair/bed, she's the best. Those are the times that are making it hard to give her up.

But that's like an hour a day

That dog has something else in her. Almost looks Chihuahua mix. That would explain some the be behavior and shedding.

Have your vet give you the script and fill it at Walgreens/Rite Aid, the price drops from $40 a month to $12 for a 6 week supply.

You were right, called vet for script. Walgreens can fill for $15/mo. instead of $35. Can't believe I never thought of that

Undecided but if I do, it's a $20/mo. savings and if I don't, it'll be easier to give her to someone willing to pay an extra $15/mo. vs. $35.

I got a puppy recently and it would not crate train and barked all night for 2 months straight. We made the decision to give it up and while you do grow attached, it is better for the dog and family if neither are happy.

She also sheds a ton. I got her before my wife and I got married. She's about ready to get rid of her. She has bad allergies, hair gets all over his blankets if we leave them on the floor.

Weak genetics. Sounds like it isn't the dog you need to get rid of.
