Why Take 3 GKs to World Cup?

Why does FIFA require that 3 of each country's 23-man roster be GKs? That spot could be used much better for an outfield player, it seems to me. Someone like Donovan for the US, or Negredo or Jesus Navas for Spain. Why not leave to the discretion of each manager how many players for each position he takes?
Should FIFA do away with the 3 GK requirement for WC squads?

It's whatever. I have a feeling most managers would take 3. If the number one keeper gets hurt then you have a starter and a back up like any other game. If the back up gets hurt then it's just not your tournament.

If you're Jurgen, just lie.
Just name 28 field players and 2 G/Ks and call one of the field players a G/K. Voila! Problem solved.

The 3rd fake goalkeeper wouldn't be able to play in the field so it would just be a waste if he did have to play.

Its like having 3 QBs on the roster. Chances are the 3d QB never sees the field and does nothing other than hold a clipboard. But you need him.

It's a terrible rule. It's not like if by some chance both GKs got hurt/sent off or whatever someone else couldn't go stand in the net.
It'd be a much easier transition for an outfield player to play in goal in a pinch than the other way around.

North Korea tired that in 2010. Didn't work.

I don't have any scientific reasoning to back me up, but I think it would be easier for a keeper to step into an outfield role if only for the fact that most keepers have probably played a different position at some point in their lives. Granted it may have been a long time ago that they did.
I have a friend who's pretty awesome as a forward/attacking mid and he tried playing keeper in a game we were kicking arse in and it did not look pretty.

I'm not saying it wouldn't serve some teams well to take 3 GKs, I'm saying they shouldn't be required by rule to do so. I think the US would be perfectly fine taking only 2 keepers, considering the quality of those two. Spain too.

Landon Donovan was never going to be a part of the team, even if they had 3 more outfield players. People need to let it go already.

I wouldn't be super bummed if Rimando had to play just like Spain wouldn't care too much if De Gea ended up having to be put in.
It's kind of a dumb rule to have but like I said, I think most manager would just call up 3 by default.
Chances are if that last guy could slip into the final roster even with an extra spot for an outfielder player, they wouldn't have made much a difference anyway.

North Korea tried that in 2010. FIFA informed them the player still couldn't play in the field.

If they didn't take 3 GKs wouldn't the rosters probably be 22 players anyway?
Isn't the only thing that makes 23 the magic number 10 outfield players + 10 depth + 3GKs?

Yes. This is it. And the 3 keepers ensures that you don't get screwed by bad luck. Any other position could be filled at least somewhat adequately. But most field players couldn't be high school keepers.

It's mandated by Fifa. You have to take 3

That's what I assumed but I was never really sure about that.
