Donald Sterling is reportedly laughing his arse off all the way to the bank.

Several other NBA owners have been reported taping racist statements for public release.

quote:

Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has reportedly won the bidding to buy the Los Angeles Clippers, submitting an NBA-record-setting offer of $2 billion to purchase the team from owners Donald and Shelly Sterling, according to James Rainey of the Los Angeles Times:

Ballmer, who was chief executive of Microsoft for 14 years, was chosen over competitors that included Los Angeles-based investors Tony Ressler and Steve Karsh and a group that included David Geffen and executives from the Guggenheim Group, the Chicago-based owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

A person with knowledge of the negotiations said the Geffen group bid $1.6 billion and Ressler bid $1.2 billion.

The sale price is almost four times the highest previous NBA franchise sale price — the $550 million paid earlier this month for the Milwaukee Bucks. It is second only to the Dodgers 2012 sale for $2.1 billion as the highest price for any sports team in North America.

No one is buying the clippers for the price of the Knicks and Lakers combined.

2 billion, that's hundreds of millions of dollars and that's tons more money than every TD poster and their families combined net worth and total wealth they will see in their lifetime.

Damn.

What happens if after the purchase, someone comes up with racist statements Steve Ballmer made in the past?

Sterling is probably pretty upset about the whole thing and will greatly miss sitting court side watching his team.

Now me, I would give up watching sports altogether for $2 Billion.

Just did some quick calculations. Is Sterling really going to owe $395 million in capital gain taxes? That shite ain't right.

I would like to know what the payout would be on this $2b investment. I don't know how much money the clipper's make annually but I don't think the new owner would recoup his investment in 20 years or until he sells the team. Personally I think this is a horrible financial investment but professional ownership is more about ego than ROI.
