I assume it was meant to humanize her. Olivia is a bit of a robot emotionally speaking.

maybe. all it seemed to do was kind of the opposite. we saw how friendly and personable her sister was, but olivia wasnt. then after a few episodes the sister goes away.

This. And they used her sister's kid, Liv's niece, to get some emotion out of her a few times as well, didn't they?

her niece played an important role much later in the show. (Olivia sisters daughter)
