Central Home Vacuum System - worth the money?

I'm looking for some help from the OT on deciding if I should get a Central Vacuum System installed in my new house (new construction). Any long term problems? I was surprised to see that they are not very expensive. Thanks in advance.

The only thing worth a damn are the ones along the base boards on hard woods that suck up the debris when you sweep.

We built our home in 2000 and I installed a central vac. Still going great, but I am waiting for the motor to give out.
If I were building again, I would probably do it again.

Had one in the house I grew up in. While it was a pain to drag the hose around vs a cord, the thing went strong for 10+ years with no repairs and very little maintenance.

I have a relative who has one that was originally installed in the late '70s and it is still kicking...the only problem has been with a couple of joints on the PVC coming unglued in the wall...so if you get one be sure the pvc and the glue are done just like you would a water system...
I have never checked the prices, but I have to say, unless they are outrageously expensive, I would probably recommend one for a new house...

Had one in my apartment in college years ago, worked well for cleaning the carpet and for other purposes.

Mom has one in a 2 story house.
It sucks and not a good way.
Only good thing was the vent that you sweep into like someone said above.
I mean its not a bad vacuum, but it doesnt pick up stuff that even a cheap stick vacuum picks up.
Id rather buy a roomba than a central vac.

I replaced the motor in mine after 20 years with a refurb of the same model. It is worth it....!

What happens when someone sucks up a sock that plugs the PVC? No good way to find the blockage or fix it.
I considered getting one but just went with a Miele canister vac - easy to move around and cleans great.

I have maids who wear the vacuum on their backs. Who needs a central sucker?

We had two attachment hoses. A suction-only tool that took interchangeableattachments and a one with powered head with a spinning brush.
The powered one also had to be plugged in.
After a few years, we just went with regular uprights. The suction just wasn't that strong. Some of that was probably due to the 10-12 plug in ports that would lose a little suction.
And it got old dragging those hoses around.

I've had 3 now - one in each house I've owned, and I'll be putting one in every house I own from now on.
We love it. Super powerful if sized correctly. Never had blockage, only have to empty canister every 6 months.
