The two concepts aren't mutually exclusive. And in the absence of knowing you personally or a observing a long track record of baseball scouting success, I'll put less credence into someone with a blatant disregard for statistics/advanced statistics than into the numbers themselves.
Yea, I think the best baseball minds use both. The Cubs especially are high on sabermetrics.
But it's silly to just out right ignore it. I guess that can explain why he thinks Junior Lake is good. He just watches the games.

You haven't seen one single person that has a baseball IQ say that Castro's defense and defensive awareness has not improved since last year so don't say "others". The only thing you know about Castro's defense is what the few numbers you looked at told you.

Hawk Harrleson coined it when he was displaying his retardation for the world to see on MLB network during the brief "are wins an important stat" pissing match that went on last year as he crusaded against advance statistics change and fun in general.

You're one of the biggest trolls/idiots on Tiger Droppings. You specialty is trolling and then taking what people say and twisting it into whatever you feel like so you can try to be a cool guy with your e-friends.

I got into this mess last year for one of the games. Got to listen to Hawkie and Stonie talk about how terrible the Cubs are and how much closer the White Sox are to being a good team. Then the Cubs beat the shite out of them for 4 straight games.

He HAS to have naked pictures of Reinsdorf's wife or something. It's the only way I can explain why he still has a job.

The Chicago Cubs kicked off the July trade deadline sweepstakes with the blockbuster that sent Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel to Oakland. Could another Cubs pitcher be the next to go?
Peter Gammons tweets Monday that the name of reliever James Russell “was heard very often this weekend.”
The 28-year-old Russell was the subject of plenty of trade rumors last July, and he could bring back an even better return this summer. In 34 appearances, the lefthander has a 2.22 ERA, a 1.068 WHIP and a 7.4 strikeouts-per-nine-innings ratio. Russell also makes a very manageable $1.775 million and is eligible for arbitration again next winter.
The Dodgers and Orioles are among the teams believed to be interested in adding a left-handed reliever. The Angels were believed to be in the mix, but they traded for Joe Thatcher over the weekend.
As was the case with the Samardzija deal, the Cubs could look to act quickly when trading partners still have the bulk of their prospects still available.

Hope he's ok. Sounds like he was lifted for precautionary reasons after fouling one off his foot.

I'm loving this debate about Castro. I have to admit, I'm probably a lot older than everyone on here, and know less about Sabermetrics, but I seriously have to question ones baseball knowledge if they think Starlin Castro plays bad defense. He's no Ozzie Smith now, but to say he is bad at defense is silly. Hell, the last time I watched the Cubs on ESPN Rick Sutcliffe and the other announcer (Boone?) were saying he was one of the top defensive SS in MLB.
I don't think the Cubs are going to trade Castro anytime soon. I could see him moving to second in a couple of years when the kid they got from the A's gets promoted. Castro has said in the past he'd be open to a position change.
Kris Bryant is exciting. I think he'll be the best third baseman since Ron Santo. I think Baez would be the most likely to be traded, but I'm hoping they convert him to right field.

You would think Derek Jeter is the best defensive SS ever to play the game if you go by what the media says
I love Sutcliffe to death but he is a huge Cubs sunshine pumper. He was talking about the Cubs making a playoff run on the last ESPN Cubs telecast
The Cubs have a nice problem. I just want to see Castro have a nice 2nd half and maybe follow up this year with the same kind of year in 2015

But that's not what the defensive WAR stats tell you!!11! Castro is TERRIBLE because that's what the number says. All the little things that he has improved in his game since last year be damned, the defensive WAR stat tells me he sucks! That's what the really knowledgeable guys in here will tell you.
But seriously I agree, no one in here said he was going to win a Gold Glove in the near future. I think the biggest compliment Castro got from someone was that he plays "very good defense". If you can't admit Castro has improved since 2013 you lack any semblance of a baseball IQ.

Agree 100%

Agree on Bryant. The opposite field power this guy has is unreal. Seems like he hits a bomb every night. I'm hoping they move Baez somewhere else as well and find a spot for all these big time bats. All I know is that it is a good problem for the Cubs to have all the really productive bats in the system. Will be a lot more entertaining to watch a team that drives in runs consistently.
