trail runners like them because it allows them to not worry about rocks and whatnot like other 0 drop shoes with less cushioning
i run trails with lots of jagged, pointy rocks and haven't had any issues with my altra lone peaks, which are zero drop.
i've tried on and test run the hoka's and they felt odd. i've been running in minimalist shoes for the last few years and missed the "feedback" from the road or trail.
if memory serves, hoka's were originally designed for ultra trail runners.
as far as my stable of shoes goes...
saucony kinvara 3 (all purpose)
saucony kinvara 4 (all purpose)
brooks pure flow (shorter runs/races)
newton gravity (all purpose)
pearl izumi em n2 (long, slow runs)
altra lone peaks (trail)

yeah it doesn't bother me either, but I've read plenty of reviews from trail runners about Hoka's and they talk about not having to worry so much about foot placement and just bombing down hills and whatnot

I thought the industry was getting away from that.
Nah. The industry is going TOWARDS that.

that makes sense.
i wonder how one feels running in them after a long, technical, steep descent. when i descend on steep trails my quads are sore for a week. i wonder if the hokas cushioning might lessen some of that.

Hoka's website:
just a heads up pretty much every shoe company claims this kind of stuff but a lot of recent studies have shown there is no injury reduction from buying more expensive shoes. I'm trying to find the one from Oregon right now.
If you're buying them for style thats completely different and go for it. but if you're buying them for injury reduction they might be stealing your money.
LINK heres an article with some good info but ill try to find that university study.
eta: heres a good one

HOKA ONE ONE has engineered a unique performance midsole geometry that features a higher volume, softer density, and greater rebounding foam than standard running shoes. Along with maximal cushioning, this provides runners of all types with an energizing, stable ride. HOKA ONE ONE understood from the beginning that foot motion was extremely important for uniformity of stride. HOKA ONE ONE incorporated minimum drop geometry along with a rolling rocker design to promote consistent rhythm in the runner's foot strike.

Best workout/running shoe I've ever owned. So light and flexible.

What kind if running are you doing?
i just run 5-6 miles a few times a week on our concrete/paved trail system, never off road trails.

Doubt it. That soreness is mostly from your body trying to brake. Not from any lack of cushioning.

I've been running in the Asics Gel-Nimbus line since the 8's. Just recently bought the 16's.

Nike Zoom Vomero. I can't wear frees or zero drops for anything more than a few miles. These are max cushion without a huge heel.

Do it more often or slow down even though it is fun to haul arse down hills. Hoka makes trail and road varieties.

you have it backwards. The key is to let it all go and haul arse downhill. Don't try to brake at all. Trying to go slow is what causes it.

I have the Brooks Adrenaline's. Lighter shoes with just enough cushioning. Thinking about switching to the Saucony Kinvara's after this.

Dude, the Adrenaline is a beast of a shoe, support wise. That's quite a jump to the Kinvara's. Take it easy at first.
eta: Moreover, if you're in the Adrenaline because you "need" them, you shouldn't be considering the Kinvara, anyways.

Work ém in. There are pros and cons, but I think it´s better for one´s foot that it not totally be immersed in a single last for months at a time.
I´ve also got some Adidas (can´t even remember the model) that suck donkey balls. I use them like cross trainers.
