According to Tammy Nunez.
Rick did great things for Tulane, but it was time for a change.

Mark Kingston will probably be getting a phone call soon.

I know RJ has been having health issues this year.
But a change has been needed for about 3 years now (if not more).
He helped transform Tulane from a very good program under Joe Brockhoff, to a team that was often nationally ranked and twice went to Omaha.
But in the last 3-5 years, the program is actually worse than it was when he took over. I don't know if he forgot how to recruit, or what. I know it's difficult with the academic standards at Tulane and the limited scholarships, but its shocking how bad they've become.

the local media has been talking up joe Schuerrman(sp), which i think is laughable

Some Tulane fans are talking him up too and it is laughable.
There should be lots of good coaches interested in this job.

Well it just makes sense to replace a guy retiring from a place with academic restrictions with an old guy thats been coaching at a juco for 30 years.

Yea, some people don't get how big of a deal those two things really can be at Tulane.
I would assume Kingston is the favorite to get the job. Which I would be good with.

He did a good job of taking advantage of the Smoke Laval years and built a solid program at Tulane.
I don't think Tulane survived LSU's resurgence and ULL's rise.

Smoke years had little to nothing to do with Tulane's rise. Tulane went to Omaha in 2001 while Bertman was head coach. It's not like we started getting the best guys in La, Tulane's 2005 team had 2 starters from Louisiana that year. Tommy Manzella who had no offers and Nathan Southard.

Katrina had a bigger impact. And more BCS conference schools emphasizing baseball has made it less attractive for players to go to Tulane on a 30% scholarship and still shell out a ton of money when State U is offering the same thing but at a third of the price.

you know tulane's history of hiring coaches...
i wonder if joe schuermann would be a better fit at UNO bc let's face it, Maestri isn't long for that job, even if his name is on the stadium.

More emphasis on baseball around the country, Katrina, tuition going up, transfer and scholarship rule changes, and replacing Mark Kingston are all things that have had a big impact on Tulane's drought.

Scott Madden too. Jesuit boy
