you compared michael jordan playing now to landon playing now.
what don't you understand?

Donovan is the only player in our entire pool I trust to pick out a few world class passes in a match against elite competition that could possibly get a result out of nothing.
This is what upsets me. I prefer him as a late sub to both Davis and Green. But we don't know what went on in camp.

I'm so fricking pissed about this

People aren't going to like this, but the out look for this world cup didn't look good in 2006. Our best player was going to be old andat an age people usually retire from the int. Game. And other than Dempsey, who could be playing in his last world cup, I just didn't see that quality of player in the youth ranks. We just aren't a soccer country yet.

Lets get behind J.K.
I am behind him. I got blasted years ago for saying we ate screwed in 2014 because Landon would be too old. Again, my problem with past coaches was playing favorites and not trying new players. I know Landon is a diff story because he's the best player in history, but we have to move on at some point to a new generation of players or we will never progress.

I have a question for anyone who may have the info.
What was the team's record and goal differential in the games that Landon missed on his break?
Would Landon have started against any of the 3 group opponents? I think Germany, possibly.

I don't know if he would have started. My guess from this decision is no, he wouldn't have started unless suspensions or injury forced jurgen to start him. He didn't make the team, I doubt jurgen would leave a player at home that he would have started.

But, we didn't move on from Landon to a new generation player - we moved on to BRAD frickING DAVIS.
He's older than Landon. He's nowhere near as talented as Landon.
If LD got left out for a more talented 25 year old, I would still be sad but I could eventually stomach it.
No one with any sense can make the case that Davis is a better option than Landon. Landon beats him in every metric possible.

Interestingly, in 1998, Jurgen Klinsmann was a 33 year old striker, who'd seen a decline in his goal scoring form in the past two seasons.
He was applauded for scoring three goals in the '98 World Cup and rode off into the sunset.
Every US broadcast this year would have been about Donovan's last World Cup and his pending international retirement. Now, every discussion will be about Klinsmann and how this is "his" team.
It's Klinsmann's ego that brought this on, nothing else.
He's the star here, remember?

He does have a huge ego. He powerplayed Ballack pretty hard when he coached Germany. Ballack was a hero and Jürgen didn't really get along with him either. He didn't have the balls to drop him thouhg.

Maybe he was more impressive than donvan in the camp.
I I don't get the outrage at all over this. Time to move on.

From Landon -

To my fans,
It has been an honor and privilege to have represented the US National Team in three World Cups. I was looking forward to playing in Brazil and, as you can imagine, I am very disappointed with today’s decision. Regardless, I will be cheering on my friends and teammates this summer, and I remain committed to helping grow soccer in the US in the years to come.
Thanks for all your support,
Landon

I really have no idea. But kilnsmann > Donovan as a player and it isn't even close. That would be my argument as why kilnnsman still had an impact at 33. I just don't see this as a surprise. Did y'all thin LD would play for ever?
I don't know what went on behind the scenes, but maybe it was case of well he's going to be on the bench, are we going to hear him bitch the whole time? I doubt it, but the two don't see eye to eye so its possible.
I don't know a whole lot about Davis, found this:
quote:
An original Dynamo player and the club's all-time leader in games, starts, and assists. This talented left-footed midfielder has the most assists (28) in MLS over the last two seasons (2012, 2011). Set career-high with 16 assists in 2011 and was MLS MVP runner-up. Has recorded 12 assists or more in each of last four seasons
Not too shabby.

What the actual frick are you talking about? Brad fricking Davis is OLDER than Donovan.

Agree.
I, like many others am a big Landon Donovan fan but there has been some "interesting behavior" over the last couple of years with Landon questioning his soccer future. Who is to say Landon didnt bring this on himself? The automatic hanging in effigy of Klinsman without at least taking a pause to try and examine the decision from all angles is a little surprising. The automatic "but Davis WTF!?!" is just knee jerk. What if Landon gave him no choice?
Dont know what really is going on behind the scenes on this one but Landon's past behavior leaves plenty of reason to error on the side of not blindly bashing Klinsman.

If Jurgen is basing decisions on 4 days of camp alone then we've got bigger issues here.

Jurgen benched Crazy Oliver Kahn for Crazier Jens Lehmann in the 2006 World Cup. It worked fairly well.
Oh shite Jurgen is going to start Brad Guzan.

Damn. That is impressive.
We should try to find the active MLS career leader in assists, and see if he's USMNT-eligible.
I know MLS is a shite league, but he might be able to make a difference.
