I am considering enrolling in the online accounting certificate program at LSU in order to meet the education requirement of the CPA designation. I already have a bachelor's degree in finance.

My question is what career options will be available to me with my finance degree plus the accounting certificate? Before and after becoming a CPA. If you have experience please share. Thanks in advance.

Well if you pass the CPA exam you would have to go into public accounting in order to complete the cpa requirements. So you would work in public accounting.

Funnily enough I'm doing exactly this at Virginia. I'm about halfway through. As a former Finance grad student and CGFM I have all the other hours to sit for the CPA.

As far as career options go, I suspect that although having the CPA designation can be a good thing the real value will be just from meeting people in the field. Your finance background honestly may not be that important unless you're planning on trying to be a CFO/controller. That's down the road a bit but if you're thinking along those lines definitely try to play on "big picture" knowledge of financial instruments.

Meh, that's not exactly true.

I had a useless Mass Communications degree from LSU and then completed the pre CPA program at UNO. I then passed the CPA exam. I am doing well and would recommend this path. My time at LSU was quite easy and fun. I did not have to study too hard for Mass Comm. Then I basically took all of my accounting classes and such in a year and half. At that point I was ready to study my arse off and take school serious. I think it helped with the exam as well because all my accounting classes were concentrated right there before I took the exam. I did public accounting for 3 and 1/2 years. I now work as an accountant for the Federal Government at a GS-13 level. The pay is good and the work life balance is ideal as I have 4 kids. Most accounting jobs require that you have a degree and then 24 hours of accounting. Good luck!
