That and his age are the biggest flaws in this idea.

A year with no coaching and poor planning can make a good player look awful. Likewise, a good environment can turn scrubs into valuable players- see Spurs.
Smith is not a garbage player. He has flaws (like every non James player) but he is also quite good. This could actually work for the Pelicans on the court.
The off court stuff is what would stop me from pulling the trigger. I don't trust Smith to age well. If he were 26, things change. And I don't trust Monty to know how to handle the roster he would have. But the real problem is that Smith takes a tricky cap situation and blows it to kingdom come. That would be a LeBron era Cavs move, a Bower move.

Why would it hurt so much? His salary is the same as Gordon, except one season longer. It would actually save the team 2 and half million over the next two seasons. Davis's extension will kick in the year after Smith's contract expires (Holiday, Evans and Smith all expire the same summer).

I must have missed something about him, cause I've never heard anything bad about Smith. He's never been in any trouble that I know of and he's not gotten into it with a coach that I remember. His only issue this past season was playing out of position. Pretty much everybody can see that. When he plays PF full time, he is an all star level player. He is a legitimate 18/9/4 and 2 blocks a game kind of guy. They aren't going to find a conventional Center that will put up that type of production. There are only a handful of PFs that can do it too.
I don't get what everybody else thinks the team should do. If Anderson and Davis can co-exist as starters (or just play major minutes together), you need someone else in the front court that makes the pairing fit. That isn't going to be a conventional Center or SF. A SF just moves Anderson to PF and makes Davis the only post player, so he'll take a beating. A Center moves Davis to PF and Anderson have to play SF, which he is not quick enough to do. A combo forward, like Smith, splits the difference. Davis has to play Center, but there is another post player to help out and swap off assignments with. Anderson moves more to the wing, but isn't chasing players much quicker than him. I just don't see how else it would work..

Pretty much this.
I watched probably 55-60 Pistons games last year. Josh Smith is a very good player. If the Pistons thought it was in there best interest to move Monroe, and have Smith start at the 4 next year, I would be fine with that. Smith had some games last year that he single-handedly won for the Pistons. But he is an absolutely terrible 3. He should never play 3 ever again. But as a 4, he can still be very productive, both offensively, and defensively. His 'demise' is terribly overblown.

The big problem with him is hammering into his head where he should shoot from.
Hint - If he's further away from the rim than about 2 feet, he shouldn't shoot.

As toxic as Gordon is, Smith is right there with him. You're trading one tough to move asset for another. Gordon has several things that MIGHT help move him- he might opt out next summer, if not he expires a year earlier, he is 3 years younger, he plays a position lacking in quality across the league- that Smith doesn't.
Plus what ceiling do they have with Smith? A 6 seed? Maybe a 4? Is that really that far off from what they could do with Gordon and some deft wing signings? An extra year of a largely untradeable asset is not worth that return for me.

Not anything about his character. I frankly know nothing about him off the court.
More that he turns 29 in December and will be 31 in the final year of his contract. He relies on his freakish athleticism for a good bit of his on court value. As he loses a step and some of his hops, I don't think he will be able to reach the same level of play. That is worrisome, especially if you want to roll out Smith/Anderson/Davis with Smith guarding wings.
ETA- Smith is closing in on 30k MP. He's got some tread on the tires. I keep having visions of Gerald Wallace's decline. Similar players. Wallce played more recklessly, but he's washed up at 25K MP.
To be clear, I like the fit right now. Smith is likely the best realistic return Gordon can bring. It's just that years 3/4 of his deal have huge Hindenburg potential. I don't want to risk that just as Davis is becoming a perennial MVP candidate.

Yep. You think Smith can passably guard wings?
Congrats on SVG. He's a good one. What are you hearing re: SVG and moves this summer? People think he can move Smith/Jennings?

The real question with Smith here is, how does he fit into a front court with AD and Ryno. If he can guard wing players on D, it can work offensively. Ryno and Smith could compliment each other pretty well. Of course, you are still lacking that physical center presence. Worth considering but I'm not saying I'd do it.

Short answer...depends on who it is.

Thanks. Best coach we've had since Larry Brown. Almost takes the sting away from losing our first round draft pick on draft night

I know nothing right now, and I don't think anyone knows anything. All I know is that SVG said that he is not making any hasty decisions, and that he is going to take his time. I think I also read that he is going to watch every Pistons game from this year to get a better look at everybody. As far as keeping/letting go Jennings, Smith, Monroe, there have been no rumblings.

The idea that J. Smith has lost a step or is a bad player is just laughable. He made the playoffs 6 straight seasons.
Funny that the Hawks made it without both him and Horford.

I think the interesting thing here is that the team has interest in Monroe
Or does he have interest in New Orleans? He knows he could be the missing piece, and Detroit is a shithole. Throw in coming back near home and family, he could be lobbying to get here for all we know.

If you miss in the East, you are bad. There is no other way to put it. His inability to hit FTs will always haunt him. You can't be labeled great if you can't finish a game at the stripe, period.

No chance, But hey, I'm a skeptic. Who knows???
FYI, I will do shameful things if this deal happens. I only want the playoffs, so tired of watching these sub-par teams compete while we sit at home wishing
