Haven't done this in a while. Aren't there some websites that give dealer invoice prices on new vehicles?

don't do it. unless you like pissing away money but certified used and let someone else take the depreciation hit.

and interest rates are higher on used vehicles, correct? And possible the cost of extended warranty since it is being purchased on a used vehicle.

I just purchased a car from offleaseonly.com and they had people flying in to buy cars. I meet one guy from Houston on the lot. check it out

The validity of this statement really depends on the vehicle the OP is looking for. So OP, what are you looking to buy?

Buick Enclave. And regarding depreciation hit, I typically run my vehicles for 10 years so depreciation is not an issue. I will probably re-think this and replace vehicles based more on the life of the extended warranty. Without that the risk of having to repair all this expensive electrical crap after warranty expires is to great.

truecar has some good info, but it doesnt provide a specific invoice price
if you go with an extended warranty, shop around....i know ford allows you to purchase your ford extended warranty from any dealer...some even sell them online at cost
not sure about GM

My mom bought a new Tahoe in November. I bought a '13 model truck with 15k miles on it...same interest rate.

Not all warranties cover that. We had to purchase an extra "technology" warranty on my wife's Hyundai to cover the computers and such.
They did throw in "free" oil changes with it to sweeten the deal.

Certified frequently offers the same rates as new. I'm paying 0.9% on mine

Only once have I have had an extended warranty on a vehicle that didn't easily pay for itself.
Other crap, no extended warranty.

Your best bet to establish the kind of deals you can get is to see what they sell for in the high volume Texas markets (Dallas, Houston). I use Autotrader to search by make model and trim level. From there, you have an idea of what kind of deal should be attainable in your local area, or at worst you can drive and get it in Texas. Usually the Texas prices are hard to beat, but if you're a good negotiator you may be able to.
Edmunds, trucar, and similar sites will let you get an idea of the invoice price.
Lastly, if you actually keep vehicles for 10 plus years, I see no issue with buying new. You want to know the car will last and is properly maintained from the get go, as well as having the full balance of the warranties.

i only bought an extended warranty one time, and it did pay for itself....but now I don't really like to hold on to vehicles for too terribly long, so I skip out on them

The F&I guy was desperately trying to get me to buy one on my truck. I did quick math in 5 years, I would have paid ~$4500 for the warranty. In 5 years, save that money in case something breaks and you can pay for it yourself rather than just give it away in case something happens.

Gotcha.
I tend to keep my vehicles long after they are paid for and run the extended warranties to 5 years 100,000K.

With new cars having rebates on many models its really WAY more intelligent to check than to just assume that used is a better choice. I paid the same amount for my truck new that a similar model 2 years older was selling for with 24k miles. If I were to compare the same money spent today my truck is valued at 4k more than the other truck would be and the other truck would be closer to 100k miles.

I know myself too well. If I had $4500 in a reserve account, that would be squandered on a vacation. Then when the car broke, out of pocket again.
So I prefer the extended warranties on my vehicles to avoid expensive repairs while its being paid for and a bit afterwards.
