What are some of the must see/do things in canun or Playa del Carmen? I'm here for the week, I'm open to all suggestions. Tia

All the Mayan ruins in the area like Chichen Itza and Tulum are cool, but they're all crowded as hell.
Take the ferry over to Cozumel for a day. Rent a car and go to the far side of the island.
There are cenotes pretty much every mile on the highway between Cancun and Playa. Pick one and spend an afternoon there.
Playa is fun to bum around in.

There's a street in playa, I think 5th street?. Pretty nice for shopping, dining, and boozing, with a view of the beach the whole stretch. Kinda threw me off though when at every other street corner there was a policia with an automatic rifle.

If say if you're over 23, just stay in Playa, but if you're under, stay in Cancun.

Go to Xcacel a few mile south of Akumal. Fabulous beach and snorkeling. One of the most important turtle nesting beaches in the world. Cost a couple buck per person to get in (donation). You're likely one of a very few people there.
Take the Robinson Crusoe sailing tour out of the Akumal Dive Shop. $100 per person. Take you out for about 6 hours. They take you to Chemuyil Bay. Free beer and lunch - fresh fish ceviche, chips, salsa, pan fried fish tacos. Snorkeling in the bay. Great trip that is worth it.
Go to Tulum and go south along the coast. Stop at any of the many Hotels/beach bars along the way for lunch. They will rent you beach chairs and umbrellas or a day bed. Beautiful place.
We go every year and going for 2 weeks next January.

We did an ATV and zip line adventure. It was with Discovery Jungle Park. They pick you up from your hotel and bring you to the place. You ride 4-wheelers way back through the forest (about a 30 minute ride each way). Then they harness you up and you do ziplines and some obstacles from tree to tree. Finally you are able to go swimming in cenote and then drive the 4 wheelers back.
It was about a total of 4-5 hours and we all had a blast. I don't know if the company is still in business because this was in 2007.

Beware of jewelry stores around 5th ave. a lot of tourist get stuck with fake gold, silver, and stones. Bait and switch is very common, the piece you look at is the real deal, but while you are paying they will offer to clean and package the piece during which it gets swapped out with a fake.
