What Is This Board's Opinion of Springsteen?

Saw him yesterday at Jazz Fest and I thought he was amazing. Everyone in the crowd that I was around was also blown away. I have followed him for years and while I do not like everything he does, I have to say that overall, he is one of my favorites - especially his anthem type songs like Badlands, Thunder Road, Born to Run, City of Ruins, Wrecking Ball, etc.
Ghost of Tom Joad yesterday was incredible.
I know that a lot of people don't like him, though. Sound off on your opinion of him. I am in a Springsteen mood today.

Mom rock?
Wow.
Thanks for the opinion, though.

Honestly I don't think I've ever listened to his stuff.

I like his stuff overall, but most of the MBs parents jammed him so it is uncool to like him.

My parents don't listen to Springsteen fwiw

I'm a big fan. I love his songwriting. He's obviously peaked though (in the late 70s, imo, although his new stuff is certainly enjoyable), and I can't stand his grandstanding for democrat idiot politicians. Comes with the territory though.
Jazz Fest was a great set. Morello killed it and Bruce was a great showman as usual.

He is actually a key figure in pop culture history. His persona -- a Jersey variation on John Fogerty's working class hero -- was the first post-hippie romanticizing of mook/guido culture, the rock & roll version of John Garfield. It would lead to the oeuvre of Martin Scorcese, the Sopranos, and God knows what else.
Musically, he got rather bombastic after ex-rock critic Jon Landau became his producer with Born To Run in 1975, and especially with Born In The USA in 1984 -- the sort of overproduced thud-rock that sold to AOR radio and filled stadiums.
It's nice to hear he still puts on an entertaining show, but I think his best, not quite as pompous stuff was very early on, and certainly "Rosalita" is a '70s classic.

As a Springsteen fan, Glory Days is a terrible song. i love the title track though.

Overall, I like his 70's stuff, although there are good songs on Nebraska and Born in the USA (NOT the song, Born in the USA).
Then, there isn't much good until the Tom Joad album. He has done some good stuff since then.
His 70's stuff was the best, I think.

Well, that just isn't true.
He is a good harmonica player.

Damned good songwriter. He has peaked but that Is natural.
"Mom rock" is accurate. My mom loves him.
Anyone who let's politics dictate their music is a douche. YES he is liberal. Everyone is when they are young or you have no soul. But who gives a frick about when you pick music.
I think Hank Jr. Is a redneck moron. But he is old. When I am in a Bocephus mood. I will listen to him and not give 2 shits about his politics. Ted Nugent is another story. Stranglehold and Cat Scratch Fever do not a catalog make. Him being crazy right wing guy only ads to his nuisance.
Had his show been at Toyota Center and not woodlands I would have taken my mom.

That Santa Claus is Coming to Town cover makes me want to rip out my hears and stick my dick in a blender

Well, go ahead then.
Look, he has done some schmaltzy stuff, no doubt. I do not deny that. I am a big fan of his and there is a lot of stuff that he did that is indefensible. He himself said that he pretty much wasted the 90's.
But, there is good music there and he put on a great show last night. You might not like it personally, and that is understandable.

I respect Bruce. He has a few good songs but I never find myself listening to them. Goin Down is my favorite tune by him. Clarence Clemons was a beast. I am also glad I saw the Jazz Fest 06 performance that has become a symbol of post-Katrina revitalization in New Orleans.

Oh by no means do I limit his ability to his sappy shite like that. I just honestly can't stand his voice
Posted on 5/4/14 at 4:37 pm to AlaTiger
Blue collar rocker and icon. I honestly don't ever have an urge to listen to him, and fans who deify the guy push me further away, but every now & then I'll hear something like Born to Run and have to acknowledge some of the best rock lyrics ever written.
