I have the ability to instantly look up anything I don't know or fully understand. I know more as a result.

I'm still a gobshite though.

Dumber? Don't know. Made our brains weaker for sure.

For example, trying to remember that woman in that movie..... ah screw it, jus google it.

We don't sit there and use our recollection capabilities.

How much of actually living our life do we miss out on as a society though?

It's made us aware of dumb people at a minimum.

As for social media, go to any restaurant and what you'll see is a group of people face booking about being there with their friends instead of having a conversation.

So,yes, we are becoming less social.

society advances. you're looking at society today through the lenses of a person living 20+ years ago

your inability to understand the advancement of society, and your indirect rejection of that advancement (due to your inferior intelligence), is a great example of the flynn effect in action. that's how it works

language is changing. communication is changing. technology is evolving so fast that we're going to have an exponential increase in the flynn effect. in 20 years or so, i imagine that i won't even be able to fully understand the youths and young adults of our society

i'm going to look at their technology and be incapable of using it, b/c my brain will not be advanced enough

i hope that on that day i embrace the advancement of our race instead of making the irrational assumption that life peaked in 2014

only if you're defining how to be social based on a very small slice of human life...likely a window from 10-20 years ago

new social interactions are breaking down certain sociological-psychological barriers, like the "150 friend" rule

It certainly has NOT helped my students. All they understand about technology is the smartphone and social media: "Why do I have only 5 likes! I am not pretty/cool!..."

"being social" has changed

it might not fit some old dude's definition of "being social" but it is still a form of being social

and mike's idea of "being social' did not fit the relative old dude's definition of "being social", either

mike appears to have grown up in the 70s or 80s, so, for example, i presume he spoke to friends/girls on the phone

that's terrible! kids today just call each other up. they don't get to SEE each other. hell i heard they don't even DANCE! boys even ask girls out over the phone! social interaction and courtship are dead!

I'm twice the guy in the video's age, and yet he gets it, as do many other people 20 years my junior, and every human being older than myself I'd say.

I think it's more of a lack of balance than doing away with technology, balance that humanity often struggles with in every single thing known to man.

Humans haven't evolved from being social people who need social interaction. We will always be social creatures and you really don't get social skills from a screen, which explains the awkwardness you see in so many people today, especially younger, who are visibly uncomfortable and awkward in social settings. I would attribute this to being so immersed in technology growing up and not being outside all day playing with kids in the neighborhood so that those skills are developed.

I would argue it's quite the contrary.

You have NEVER seen this? I see this nearly every time I go to a restaurant.
