this is really bad news. What is interesting is some businesses seem to be doing really well. I wonder where the weakness really is.

It looks like it was in exports according to this chart:
Just as an FYI, read the chart by adding the positive and negative of each bar. For example, 1Q14 is 2.2% + (-2.1%) = 0.1%

I'm not suggesting the economy is strong but the 1st quarter has highlighted by a brutal winter over the eastern half of the country. That certainly would have a depressing effect. If the trend continues into the second quarter, it's definitely time to sound the alarm.

I was discussing this with the wife last night. Although I didn't vote for Clinton, I thought his election campaign slogan when running for president, "It's the Economy, Stupid" was good. He kept the focus on the substantive issue.
Our president seems to have lost focus. Or better, his focus has never been on the economy. All emphasis appears to be on enacting social change. What happened to the 'laser-like' focus on jobs? It's not like he's powerless to help the economy. I remember our economy was absolutely languishing under Jimmah Carter. Reagan came in and turned things around, inspired us, brought people together. He wasn't without fault (who is?), but he was able to energize our economy.

the turnaround in the 80s was related to stimulus spending, which the president would like to see more of and congress (rightfully) says no.

The GDP component that shrunk the most in 1Q14 was exports. How does the weather affect exports?

People are incentivised to NOT work in this Obama economy. Until that changes this economy will remain in the doldrums.

Is it the only thing that declined? Are you suggesting the weather had nothing to do with the drop?
The export numbers are troubling though, I don't deny that. Why were they down? Less demand for US goods overseas? Drop in production here? I'll do some reading later, I'm just curious on the quick and dirty of it.

As a country, how long do we have to put up with this bullshite? There are nothing but harmful, growth-stifling economic policies coming from Washington. They prop up the stock market by printing money, attack the coal industry with more regulations, promote ineffective "green" projects, increase taxes on us for ineffective national healthcare crap, over-regulate just about any business they believe is "bad", refuse to allow expansions in drilling areas (including building keystone) and overstep their authority.
It's all a house of cards.

Exports were not the only thing to drop in 1Q14 but it was the GDP component with the largest drop. See the chart above this post.
I'm not saying the weather had nothing to do with 1Q14. I just trying to figure out the negative correlation. Consumer spending GDP component was robust for 1Q14. I just don't understand why exports were so low.
Now that I think about it, maybe exports declined due to the actions in the Ukraine.

Point taken regarding spending. I agree. We don't want more government spending. The first stimulus didn't work and was just pay off to cronies.
Other things Reagan did though:
He clamped down on government unions which were organized against the taxpayer and had no incentive to be cost efficient or productive. He tried to reduce red tape, needless regulations which made it difficult for business. He thought that "Government is not the solution to the problem - government is the problem" and reduced the size and scope of government. The current occupant of the White House is doing the opposite and it is stifling productivity at a time when we really need it.

that is just talking points. he didn't really do that much outside of deregulation of price controls, which I agree was a net good.
he did reform the tax code though.
he did talk about small gov't, but his policies were the opposite.
