In 1900, there was no practical way for a poor person to regularly live above their means because they simply didnt have the assets to put down for such activities. In 2014, we have ample means of paying for things we dont actually have money for. It is very, very easy to live above your means today. That wasnt the case for most of history.
Yeah I agree with this.

there was most certainly a way for poor people to live above their means. Moneylenders have existed for thousands of years, and poor people are great targets since they are low flight risks, often lack education (read math skills) and are much easier to bully than rich people.
I will totally agree, borrowing money is easier now though. And there are more ways to borrow.

It was much more difficult to obtain loans from reputable sources back then, and the dangers of borrowing money you couldnt pay back from shadier lenders was substantial.

the average IQ is less then 100 in this country, i mean what do you expect? dumb people make dumb decisions. You nor I will ever understand it because we are not Dumb. I hate to be mean and so blunt but it is the truth. And people who make a lot of money can be dumb with money. But in general, people who have low IQs make decisions that are stupid to those of us with higher IQs.
The average is actually 100, making half of the population below average ( president Eisenhower was astonished to learn this, and didn't understand the simple mathematical reality!. There is no shortage of PhDs, MDs, JDs, and other highly educated people that cannot manage money.

There's no need to use the data service. I have a smart phone because it was the only free option. My data use is basically nill. Sometimes it goes up a little during football season.
Your data use may be nil, but for a free phone you still have to purchase a plan.
If you find one giving out free phones with no service contract, let me know. I'll be all over it once my contract expires.

I've ALWAYS lived "paycheck to paycheck". Cash sitting in a checking account does nothing for me. If I have money left over from my last paycheck when I get my next, I've miscalculated somewhere.
It's called 'budgeting'. I pretty much know where all of my money is going to go before I get it.

It seems everyone in my feed is fighting to take the biggest trip, have the biggest parties/tailgates, buy cars, motorcycles, clothes and hunt/fish the most.

I'm sure social media is a factor and all media for that matter. Years ago, some people's entire worlds was limited to the town or region directly around them and one didn't constantly know what others were doing or had. Now, someone is eating at a fancy Resturant, they post it on Facebook. Buy a new ride, same. It's definitely a factor.

Lol, hope this was a joke

To me the question is why has it changed. Is there a root cause of our society becoming increasingly materialistic?
