Chuck the deuces..
Are we talking about someone who died, or is this some chick that you're breaking up with?

Are you asking how to get rid of someone? Or how to handle a permanent separation?
Good luck on the first one. For the second, sit down and have a long talk with them, get everything you want to say to them out, and leave with no regrets. The worst thing is regretting something. Don't regret not doing something.

Do it while you can.
Make your peace. Don't leave anything left unsaid. Forgive any grievances you have. Settle old debts. Let them know that you're letting them go...
And then mourn.
ETA: wait, are we talking about death, or toxic people?
If it's the latter...
"Never darken my door again."

Not easy if you had any attachment to them. Just broke it off the the GF last night. Wanted to do as little damage as possible. No bashing, etc. Told her I respected her as a person, that she was a good person, and should never let anyone tell her otherwise. Just some things that were not compatible enough and it was best to end things sooner than later. Think she handled it pretty well. I just remembered how I was treated on a couple of breakups and was not going to do that to someone else.
If it is someone who you have been in an acrimonious relationship with for a bit, then the best thing is to tell them that it is time to live seperate lives and that your decision is final. (Keep a gun near by, in the event other person gets crazy to the point of being a threat to your physical safety)/
If it is someone who has died, remember all the good times you had together, do your grieving, and have a drink in their honor.

Not sure what your circumstances are, but saying goodbye to someone who you know is dying and then leaving, knowing they'll be gone before you can get back to see them, is one of the shittiest feelings in the world. I lied and said "I'll see you soon. Love you."
But not being able to say good-bye properly, thinking someone will be coming back and they don't, is even worse.

You won't answer my calls, you change your number. I mean, I'm not gonna be ignored, Dan!

Depends on the situation and circumstances.

If it's someone close to you who's on death's doorstep, just be there for them and tell them how much they have meant to you. Don't leave anything unsaid about letting them know how much you cared for them. If you both believe in an afterlife, tell them that you will see them again.
