Gardening Thread

I have tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucs, ocra, melons and cantelope all in my garage under a light.

Spot is prepped but waiting a bit longer to transfer them outside. Due to our cold temps, all of my seeds sprouted later than normal so they arent quite ready to transplant yet.

My garden spot use to be two raised flower beds. The timbers were rotten though and not really big enoguh anyway so I tore them out and tilled the entire area. been working in manure, compost and shredded leaves for the last two years.

Every time I go to mine I say I'm taking a picture, but my hands always end up muddy and I leave my phone in my pocket. Here's what I have to-date, subject to change based upon 33 degree forcast for Wednesday morning, and possible hail tonight.

Close to 80 tomato plants, of differing varieties.

4 rows of corn (all rows 160-175' long each)

2 rows of potatoes

1 row bush beans

1 row cucumbers (1/2 burpless, 1/2 straight eights)

1 row squash (yellow crooked-neck, and yellow straight-neck)

1 row a mix of zucchini, eggplant, peppers

1 row of cantaloupe

1 row of watermelons in main garden

1 500' row of watermelon in a different field


I have 3 wires of electric fence around it (solar powered)

I have a 2" pump if needed to water from a pond right next to the garden

It's a family garden (me, brother, old man) share responsibilities on, but my pop is retired so he goes by every day. I go about 3-4x per week right now. My brother will go once stuff needs picking.

Over the past couple weeks I planted two satsumas and 6 blackberry bushes

I haven't been able to take any yet. Finally got the first row planted this weekend. Waiting for some seedlings to develop a bit more before planting the rest.

I didn't do it this year, but I may try running a soaker hose below the weed fabric for watering. I'm afraid the holes will clog, though.

I've been building up my soil for several years. Last year I added a lot of manure and miracle grow garden soil, but I didn't add any soil this year. I had my soil tested instead and ended up adding urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, and soil acidifier (I needed to bring the pH down from around 7.35). We'll see how it works out.

When I was prepping the soil, the only things I saw were a ton of worms, grubs, a few spiders, and a toad.

Local gardening soil, plus my home grown compost.

California sun will grow just about anything.

No raised beds. Regular style garden.
22 Rifle works well unless it is deer or rabbits then I just shoo them away so I can hunt them later.
