moving back 6 would = Houston #33 + #101 (4th Rd)
moving back 12 would = Jax #39 + #105 + #114 + #144

If we drop lets drop like a man and get a very valuable 2nd pick. I think the talent pool is very muddied in the 2nd

Is there a quantity over quality thing with the draft or you rather get guys you think are quality over having a bunch to choose from who could actually all become superstars too but you just dont know it yet.

I wish we had three in the 2nd.
Somehow.
A very good WR'r OLB'er and a top pick of centre's could be had.

Possible but my idea/post was that in the second round we would have our pick of the top rated center in the 2014 draft.
If we wait till the 3rd this will most likely not be the case.

I don't think the saints are prioritizing the center position that much to use a top 3 round pick

Agreed. Marcus Martin MAYBE in the 3rd just because of the big hole at C... Otherwise Stork in the 4th is much more likely...

Trading up has not worked too well for us. Every year I want to trade down in the first or out of the first unless someone we really want falls in our lap.
It would be nice if someone listed our first and 2nd rounders under Payton to see how well our picks have been in each round.
IF we pick better in the 2nd, then drop down. IF we have good luck in the 1st, then take what's there.

2006 Roman Harper
2008 Tracey Porter
2010 Charles Brown
That's all of the 2nd round picks we've had in the 8 years under Payton. Lost two to the "bountygate" bullshite and the rest were traded away.
As was said, Payton doesn't mind giving the second pick away to move up. I wouldn't be shocked if it happened again. If it does, Payton might catch a lot shite because of how deep this draft is.

We lost two to bounty farce. Another in the Ingram trade.
Those were 2011 (Ingram), 2012, and 2013 (the last two bounty).
What happened to 2007 and 2009? Was 2007 Ellis?

2007 Traded to Lions for their 3rd and 5th
2009 Traded to Giants for Shockey
2011 Traded 2nd and 2012 1st to pick Ingram

Damn I forgot Shockey was for a 2nd(and a 5th) rounder. Giants didn't get jack with either pick.
We got Usama Young and David Jones with the Lions picks in 2007(also made 3 other trades that day). Bleh. Lions got Ikaika Alama-Francis which was even worse.
Ellis was a swap of 1sts and our 3rd for their 5th in 2008.
Ranking our 2nd round pick use under Payton I'd have to go(year pick was from):
Harper(06)
Porter(08)
Shockey(09)
Ingram(11)
Young/Jones(07)
Bounty(13)
Bounty(12)
Brown(10)

frick Charlie Brown. I knew he was going to frick us over. I called it all offseason(and was screaming for a trade up to get a top LT, but hey, Armstead ) and then he had to go and play well in preseason giving me the slightest bit of hope that he wouldn't frick us over. And then he fricked us over.
I would rather have no pick than Charlie Brown.
Also, I rated the 2012 bounty pick lower because I was still seething mad during that draft. 2013 was the return of Payton and the revenge tour.

My great hope is that the staff comes up with a killer draft. We know they have in them because they've done it before (2006 draft was most probably the best draft in the team's history).
I just find it strange that they're so good with late round picks and UFAs yet miss the mark so often in the early rounds. Very strange.

quote:Speaking strictly draft, trust me that's a bit off a myth. The 2006(and now 2013) drafts help propel it.

Guys that have played significant roles for at least 2 years with us with 2013 added in anyway(quality can be questioned):
1-3
Bush(1st)
Harper(2nd)
Meachem(1st)
Ellis(1st)
Porter(2nd)
Jenkins(1st)
Robinson(1st)
Graham(3rd)
Jordan(1st)
Ingram(1st)
Hicks(3rd)
Vaccaro(1st)
Armstead(3rd)
Jenkins(3rd)
4-7
Evans(4th)
Strief(7th)
Colston(7th)
Bushrod(4th)
Nicks(5th w/1st round talent)
Morstead(5th and punters always go late)
White(5th)
Stills(5th)
That's 14-8. Adding the 3rd rounders to the later rounds makes it 10-12. Keeping in mind that Morstead is a punter and Nicks was a 1st round talent, that's basically a wash if you split 1-2 and 3-7. If you keep it 1-3 and 4-7 it's a clear advantage for the top half.
Now add in the fact that we only used 3 out of 8 2nd rounders(down 5 2nd rounders) to actually pick someone at that spot and that's pretty good for the top 3 rounds considering.
So yes we do hit later, but not as much as earlier especially given the number of picks in 1-3 vs. 4-7, and damn sure not as much as people think we do.
Now if you want to talk UDFAs, hell yeah we do great with those.

I also want to dispel the myth we always hit on late round Olinemen.
2+ year starters
Evans(4th)
Strief(7th)
Bushrod(4th)
Nicks(5th)
Busts or have yet to see (meaningful)playing time
Alleman(3rd)
Brown(2nd)
Tennant(5th)
Tiller(6th)
Jones(7th)
I'm inclined to put Armstead(3rd) in the 2+ year starter category.
But realistically when you look at this, we had a good run between 06-08 with linemen. Evans and Strief are legit gems. Bushrod was serviceable. Nicks was a 1st round talent steal because of character issues.
Then we had a terrible run between 09-12 until Armstead in 13. Alleman, Brown, Tennant, and Tiller were all busts. Jones may be headed to that list if he doesn't show something this year(but I'm pulling for him).
So you have 2 legit late round gems, 1 potential early round good starter, 1 serviceable late round player, 1 late round steal, 2 early round busts, and 2(maybe 3) late round busts.
This was my main issue with everyone blowing off taking a tackle early last year(though the Saints hit on Armstead). It's a 50/50 proposition. And I feel people are doing that again with center this year. The one center we drafted was a bust. Maybe this one works, maybe he doesn't. 50/50.
