I was only 5, but I vaguely remember my parents talking about it.. but I never saw it. Because of Newton and Edmund Halley it is by far the most famous Comet. I'd be around 81 if I ever get another chance to see it.. it's obviously possibly for me... but I wish I'd caught it the first go round.

I remember. All the teachers had geekgasms. I was not that impressed. Diff'rent Strokes had a special episode.

It's the end of the world as we know it.

I feel fine.

I remember looking for it and never finding it. It was a huge let down.

I saw it through the telescope at the LSU observatory. It was disappointing.

I assume the Observatory is still there?

I want to go camping and see the stars. I can't see shite here in Houston, my one thing I hate about living in cities.

There wasn't much to it, the orbit happened to be not very favorable for a good show. At it's brightest it was a barely visible smudge, although you could see the tail through binoculars.

Hale-Bopp was one of the all-time greats, covering a quarter of the sky. Hyakutake the year before had an even bigger tail but it wasn't nearly as bright, still very impressive though.

I was living in south Florida then and heard the best place to see it was about two hours away, near Key Largo between two particular mile markers, around 2:00 a.m. on a particular night, so off I went. There were cars parked everywhere and I squeezed my car off US 1 between the mile markers, and started looking up. Some family nearby took pity on me and offered me their telescope aimed at the comet. I eagerly peered at the sky and saw a glow, which was all that could be seen. Disappointed, as I passed through Key Largo on the way back, the song "Key Largo" came on the radio. I figured that was the payoff for my adventure.
