I'd have to do reliability if moved to Houston or went offshore.

Does working offshore rigs versus working at a well on the mainland generate a much higher salary?

Don't know what people make on land, but I don't know anyone making less than about 120 for us right now. Guys with experience are making 200-300. That's not engineering....just field personnel.

People leave college without a potential wife in tow? I thought that was the point of grad school (to snag an undergrad chick). When will you be in a target rich environment like that again?

It's not a fun schedule. I know of guys being offshore since early January on one job. They get to come in for a day or so here and there to re-set their clock, but it's right back out until the job's done. I couldn't do it. The guys making the rediculous money have 20+ years experience for the most part. New guys making 120 are never home. We just got done with a big hire.

Measurement tech is not a bad job to have offshore. You will get alot of experience and make more money the more years you have in. There are alot of land jobs that you could move to also.

i went to college and still work offshore, was ops for 3 years now ive moved up into compliance, next step will be onshore.

you will either love it or hate it.

in my current situation i love it. the money is great, and the time off is even better.

try it out, give it 3-5 months, you will know by then if you like it .

Went to college for college + offshore pay.

For those of you working offshore who went to college...did you all do petroleum engineering? See many mechanical engineers working offshore?

Mix of a lot. You have mechanical/petroleum/electrical/civil/computer/chemical. These platforms are massive and complex, and require every discipline of engineering to design.
