17 years. Three kids. What scares me the most is that I'm gonna ask myself what the hell did I do upon retirement.

do it now and work your way up.

You can make really good money pretty soon.

Bottom line:

There is a reason the pay is good. If you can deal with the negatives then good for you.

Also keep in mind once you get used to offshore money and start racking up debt(big mortgage, King Ranch SuperDuty payments, etc.) you may have a tough time finding a job back home to support that lifestyle when/if you get tired of the offshore life.

This. It will give you tons of experience and having a college degree plus that experience will open up a lot of doors for you

This CAN be a good move. I assume you are going on a production facility?

Don't be an idiot and think you have "arrived". You will be making good money. Like the other posters said don't go buy a big stupid truck and get yourself in loads of debt.

If you play this right it can lead to fairly big things. The oilfield is one place that is typically a meritocracy. In other words they don't care about your background as much as your performance. Are you the guy that can get things done and make things happen? If so you have a bright future that may involve world travel and more money than you ever dreamed you'd make.

It'll take planning and a lot of work but you CAN get there. Be thinking five years out and where you want to be then. Constantly move to your 5 year point and DON'T put up with anyone tell you that you can't get there.

If I was single and fresh out of school with a technical degree and no experience, I'd jump on it. A lot of people do it for a few years then get an office job making 80k or more. I know others who planned to do that, but liked the lifestyle and don't ever want to come in the office now.

Well, I'm sure you realize there are plenty of people with college degrees working offshore making 3 times what you make.

For those of you working offshore who went to college...did you all do petroleum engineering? See many mechanical engineers working offshore?

Lots of mechanical engineers offshore. It's really a mix.

We have reliability engineers on our assets offshore and they work a 14/14. They are typically Mech,Elec and chem.
