Earlier rovers were small, almost deposible explorers. Expected to last a couple of months before dust covered the solar cells too much to keep running.
They lasted years.
Curiosity is a full fledged analytical lab that's about the size of an SUV, powered by nuclear fuel cells.
It may still be working when we finally get a man over there
