The last time I was at Hollywood Casino I saw one of those "Call 1-800-xxx-xxxx if you have a gambling problem" signs.
The dealer had a 9 showing and I had a soft 18. I didn't know if I should stand or take a card.
So I called the number on the sign.
They were no help at all, fwiw.....

I'm not much of a gambler. I put $20 in the slots a few times a year and have only played Blackjack in a casino a few times.
I've always been curious, does the double your bet every time you lose thing work?
It seems like it would but I've obviously not done field testing.

If you have infinite money and the table has no bet limit, yes. Considering neither is accurate, no.

In theory it works, but in reality you run out of money, limit or balls before you win

And it also assumes 50% odds, which is not the case.

As long as it pays 2:1, it really does not matter?

Well, in theory no. But no one has an unlimited bankroll, and if you have a huge bankroll, you probably don't care about profiting only the starting bet, which is what you end up winning each time you win.

I fully agree on the second part of your statement, but how would it matter the % of times the bet wins if it pays 2:1?
ETA: never mind, I re-read

Blackjack has always fascinated me as it is played in the casino.
The dealer may be playing 5 people but essentially it is one on one. The dealer has to sit on a 17 so essentially it would seem that the player would have the advantage.
I'm assuming the house has the advantage with multiple players against the dealer as the dealer only needs to beat the majority of the table to win.
Would the house have any advantage if blackjack tables only had one chair?

Everytime you get a chance to play a Blackjack dealer and you are the only person, I do it and I bet big until someone sits down.
Turned $100 into $2000 in about 10 minutes one night at the Beau.

The advantage comes in that if both you and the house bust, you lose.

if you bet bigger when the count is in your favor your odds are better than 50% payout
