Only in New Orleans (Metairie) can you walk into a Barnes and Noble and Allen Toussaint is playing a free show with 5 people watching. Incredible. Asked him to play Sweet Dreams and he looked at me like "what you know about Sweet Dreams white boy?"

One of the all-time greats, and the man most responsible for the N.O. r&b boom during the 60's through the early 70's. Artists that he shaped/influenced include: Ernie K-Doe, Benny Spellman, Lee Dorsey, Irma Thomas, Tommy Ridgley and god knows who else. He still performs and is about to release a new album. One of the nicest damn people you will ever have a chance of meeting. In my younger days, I had a confrontation with a then new orleans politico, and he saved me from getting my arse busted and arrested. For a modern take on some of his classic tunes, look up the album Occapella by Jon Cleary.

I met him in City Park on a random afternoon. I was stoked to shake his hand.
