Not even in the top 50 imo. I'd put Hopkins, Bale, Portier, Hoffman, Seymour Hoffman, Pacino, Norton, Dicaprio, Olivier, Whittaker, Stewart, Spacey, etc

Tyler Perry is the GOAT.

He's up there I believe. There are a lot of his movies that I cannot imagine another actor pulling off the role.
My current favorite is Ralph Fiennes. He needs to be in more movies.
Also DDL is way up there.

I saw AMC's top 50 and Hanks is numero uno. Daniel Day Lewis is 20? Wtf? Jack Lemmon is 4?

Tom Hanks is the only guy who can make you cry from losing a volleyball

Stewart was great but Cagney was the man and Hanks is good but he has made some stinkers.

this is such a true statement though

Daniel Day Lewis
He's incredible, no doubt, but he's only the best dramatic actor. Hanks has an unmatched catalog.

Is the competition open only to men? I think Meryl Streep is better than Hanks, and I love Hanks.
Hanks' best quality is his likeability. His Hanksness shine through in every role. He certainly can deliver quality characters, but you don't see him go too far outside of himself.
To me, he's about on par with Paul Newman, maybe better by a nose, but not much.
Lots of other actors are a little better at providing riveting unique performances where the actor disappears and the character emerges, but they may not have that star quality.
John Torturro is one of many who most readily comes to mind. Of course, he's not a leading man type, but his performances are amazing, movie after movie. The Coens really know how to use this guy!
I think that of the leading man type actors, I still wouldn't put Hanks above Brando or even Hoffman. As great as Hanks is, has he performed a role better than Brando in On the Water Front, or A Streetcar Named Desire, or The Godfather? Or better than Hoffman in The Graduate, Tootsie, or Midnight Cowboy?
What are the 3 top roles for Hanks? For me it's Big, Forrest Gump, and Cast Away. That's solid work right there! I guess, after all my meandering, I'd say he's in the discussion for GOAT, but only a groomsman and not the groom.

That was a great role, and he was great in it, but you're overstating it. There are quite a few quality actors who could have nailed that role.

Greatest of All Time includes a lot. But when you consider total body of work, Oscars, Academy Award nominations, Golden Globes and nominations and Prime Time Emmy Awards, there can be only one, Meryl Streep: 3 Oscars, 18 Academy Award nominations, 8 Golden Globes with 26 nominations and 2 Prime Time Emmy Awards out of 3 nominations.

I don't know who but I know that list wouldn't be that long.

He's certainly in the conversation. I can't think of any other actor who is more versatile.
Posted on 4/1/14 at 9:13 pm to LSUTigers1986
He is far from the greatest actor ever.

So you could see Kevin Bacon or Colin Firth talking to a volleyball for an hour and a half?
For me Jimmy Dugan may be him at his finest, comedy and drama. Stole the movie from the star.

I think to carry a movie like Cast Away, you do need an extremely likeable guy. Kevin Bacon wouldn't do.
Colin Firth? Maybe, but it wouldn't have had the same type of impact as Hanks.
I really think that the movie watcher is watching a person who is 90% Hanks and 10% Chuck Noland (the actual name of the character). When the guy cries about losing Wilson, it's Hanks crying, not Chcuk Noland crying, so the audience, who loves Hanks, is more easily moved.
The only actors who have that likeability working for them as much as Hanks... no one. I was going to consider Jimmy Stewart or Sidney Poitier, but no one matches Hanks for likeability.
