Ohr ruled that Northwestern players can hold an election on whether they want to be represented by the College Athletes Players Association, which brought the case to the NLRB along with former Wildcats quarterback Kain Colter and the United Steelworkers Union.

As a former walk on at TCU this is retarded.
But if they insist on calling Northwestern Football players "employees", that's fine. Pay them but pull their scholarships. Force them to pay their tuition, meals, housing, etc. with their new salaries.
And then the inevitable lawsuit by walk on players since this doesn't apply to them. Walk on players put themselves in harms way just as much as the scholarship guys considering a lot of them are pretty much target practice on scout teams.
I was a walk on at TCU and got 3 concussions throughout my time there playing wide receiver on scout team.

What could possibly go wrong?

Will change everything.

I can't see this being abused.
Nope. Not at all.

if you treat them as employees then the less productive employees (the walk ons) will not get paid the same wage as the top performers.
No one made you walk on to the team.

And don't forget paying the associated payroll and social security taxes that other employees pay. Also union dues.

Bye bye Northwestern football if this is not overruled.

Hmmmm... How would players pay union dues without pay? Schollys don't pay union dues.

You apparently have no experience with unions.

But according to the Northwestern players this is all about safety and medical treatment. They put themselves in harms way and they don't benefit financially. By this logic the walk ons and players who don't play are just as much entitled to compensation as the scholarship players since they put themselves in harms way during practices.
And without the scout team players the team either has to prepare without a scout team or use scholarship guys who play as the scouts. Then the walk ons could create their own "walk-on" union. They would say either pay us the same as scholarship players, or find another way to prepare for games!
I am just illustrating why this unionization is a bad idea.

They get hefty scholarships, don't they?!?! If they insist on being called employees then the scholarships and/or any other payment they receive should be considered salary, subject to taxes, dues, etc.

What is tuition, room and board a year there? Uncle Sam is going to want his cut...

I guess the kids will now start paying for their own meals and lodging on road trips. Deducts, deducts, deducts!

Next: band unions, cheerleader and dance squad unions, student unions, civil unions, civil unrest, dogs sleeping with cats, ooohhhhhhh the humanity!!!!

I agree. So is GPA now a condition of employment? Do they receive unemployment benefits if they are kicked off the team? Workers Comp for injuries? Can coaches still discipline team members for conduct off the field? How does this impact NCAA penalties for Institutional Control? How sea it impact NCAA investigations and University responses to such investigations?

I'm not surprised:
So only one person made this decision? Jeez.

Peter Sung Ohr was appointed Regional Director of the Chicago Regional Office (Region 13) in 2011. Mr. Ohr began his career with the NLRB in the Honolulu Sub-regional Office as a Field Attorney, where he worked from 1997 until 2005. In 2005, he was appointed Deputy Assistant General Counsel in the NLRB’s Division of Operations-Management.
Born in Seoul, Korea, Mr. Ohr received his B.A. degree from the University of California-Riverside in 1989. He was awarded his J.D. degree from Pepperdine School of Law in 1994 and a M.B.A. from Hawaii Pacific University in 2000.

Trying to imagine a player representative presenting a grievance to Nick Saban, Mike Leach or Bobby Knight, Woody Hayes, Bear Bryant.

I'm not sure they realize the full capacity of what is about to happen. They will long for the days of full rides, housing paid for, food paid for education paid for.
If this takes place, and it has a domino effect around CFB, you can say good bye to everyone but the Big Boys.
Those with the most money, can negotiate the higher compensation.
This is bad.

This is horrid and makes NCAA football the same as NFL - which I don't like nearly as much.
