I don't agree with this. I think you're partially right (maybe mostly right. I'm not against legalization. I think it should be up to the states, but I don't think you can say that all of these people who stay stoned all the time would be on welfare regardless...

One of the dumber arguments in the debate is how if we legalized weed that the cartels would cease to exist and violence would die down.
They would just find other things to smuggle.
What created the cartels? Go back and look at the original prohibition and see what happened, and how we haven't learned shite from it. Sure they'll find other enterprises, but allowing them to continue their violent stranglehold on the drug trade because of ignorance isn't helping anything.
Can't see how any fiscal "conservative" would be for the war on drugs. Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

1) The illegal nature of the drug isn't keeping stoners from using.
2) If there weren't any pot available, these people would find something else to use.
You may gain a few more slackers, but the cost to society will decrease, not increase.

First-you are a great poster and I love you man. Let me get that out of the way. I'm on your side bro. This is NOT personal.
Getting stoned on a daily basis is indicative of much larger personal issues and addictive problems. Just like the guy who has the DAILY beer/wine after work. You need to be asking yourself why you want to get stoned every day for 20 years.
Marijuana has obvious effects on motivation and clarity. It's a major reason why your employer prohibits you from using it, and why we teach our kids there are better things to do with their time.
Look all this just demonstrates my point- recreational Stoners can get stoned all they want, but let's not pretend that when used correctly that it is anything other than what it is, a mildly hedonistic vice. It doesn't contribute anything of real value to a society, even if it is an expression of personal freedom.

The older you get, the less you smoke and actually the less you need to get buzzed. These days, I can smoke on one joint for 3 or 4 days.

I swear, I respond to Zach before I read your post. When I said, "Nha mon, that's Labrador." That is the exact scene I was referring to.

Cheech and Chong makes me cry laughing still today. "Nha mon, that's Labrador."
Sorry, I just don't find that funny. My sense of humor tilts toward 'theater of the absurd'.
Some examples that I'm sure no one here remembers...
a. Man from UNCLE ..they are caught in a jail cell by the evil CHAOS. But Ilya has hidden a tiny chain saw in the heel of his left shoe. He is able to saw the bars off the window and escape.
b. Batman..the TV show with Adam West. The Penquin opens up his machine gun fire against the dynamic duo. But Batman luckily has a fold up bullet proof shield in his utility belt. It's basically a windshield of a Honda motorcycle.
After a while the shooting stops and Batman says: "He's out of ammo, let's go."
Robin: "How do you know?"
Batman: "Because by the sound of the gun I'd say it's a 239 Browning water cooled Machine Gun which has a capacity of 1,150 rounds. And I've been counting."

It's all good I don't take it personal. I don't consider myself a pothead. I'm a person a uses pot but it's not how I identify.

Because it feels good and I enjoy it, simple as that. Actually the 20 years thing is not really accurate, I was completely sober for 5 years from age 18-23. I went back to smoking cause I came to realize that my life was no better or worse being sober so why not enjoy myself.

Well I don't smoke on the job it's something I do away from work on my own time in the comfort of my own home. I also don't have kids.

Why does it have to contribute something to society? What does people getting amped up on coffee in the morning or coke during the day contribute to society? I always found caffeine to be far more addictive.

Yep.
Problem is, some folks just have hangups about pot (and drug) use. They can't seem to get past it. Criminalizing pot is more of a drain on society than decriminalization will ever be.

You made my point. It can be a legitimate expression of personal freedom, but it is at best a mundane, mildly hedonistic act, that signifies nothing of any real value other than your claim to have a positive mood adjustment. When Pot Culture gets all self-important and pretends it is on the Vanguard of Human Freedom, I must chuckle. I have never met a really successful adult who wanted their own flesh and blood children to become stoners. There IS a very common-sense, non-ideological reason for that.

Love the Adam West Batman
But, to add to the conversation, marijuana prohibition is quickly coming to an end and that's due a combination of a lot of things such as the lack of negative health effects, potential influx of huge tax revenue, economic stimulus, and positive benefits for people who use it for medical purposes.

I don't see a problem with that.
In the end, pot legalization may be the vehicle to get old stodgy fake fiscal conservatives to actually realize personal liberty is a right wing cause.

And how is that not a real value to me? It helps relax me after a long day of work. Helps ease my stress and helps comfort my aching back, knees and feet. I don't see what the problem is with that?
It's no more mundane or mildly hedonistic than people who enjoy caffeine, tobacco or alcohol.

I'm not a big fan of Pot Culture. I pretty much rejected it by age 15 after much stonage. To me, it's like Swinger Culture-it tends to be flaky and cheesy and loaded with losers posing as heroes. It may be a step forward for personal freedom, I have favored it's legalization since the 1980's when William F. Buckley persuaded me, and all my stoner friends shamed me, but let's not pretend it's some high expression of humanity. It's base and pedestrian, at best.
