Christian school tells 8 year old girl that she's not feminine enough

Has the Christian Right become so paranoid that they have stooped to bullying tomboys? EIGHT YEAR OLD tomboys at that.
We had plenty of tomboys at my elementary school in the 1980's. Noone thought a thing about it.

quote:
Timberlake, VA - Sports, sneakers, and short hair; it's what makes eight year old Sunnie Kahle unique. It's also what had her removed from Timberlake Christian School. Her grandparents pulled the plug on her time there after they said she was no longer welcome.
The family received a letter telling them that if their eight year old granddaughter didn't follow the school's "biblical standards," that she'd be refused enrollment next year. She's out and in public school now.
Sunnie Kahle has short hair and a huge heart, and as far as her grandparents are concerned, she is a completely normal little girl.
"She cries every morning to get on the bus, she cries when she comes home because she wants to go back to Timberlake Christian with her friends," said Doris Thompson.
Doris and Carroll Thompson are Sunnie's grandparents. They adopted and raised the little girl and took her out of Timberlake Christian School when they received a letter from the school's K-8 Principal.
"You're probably aware that Timberlake Christian School is a religious, Bible believing institution providing education in a distinctly Christian environment," read Doris from a part of the letter.
The letter goes on to say that students have been confused about whether Sunnie is a boy or girl and specifies that administrators can refuse enrollment for condoning sexual immorality, practicing a homosexual lifestyle or alternative gender identity.
The letter goes on to reference specific Bible verses that affirm these beliefs.
The letter reads in part, "We believe that unless Sunnie as well as her family clearly understand that God has made her female and her dress and behavior need to follow suit with her God-ordained identity, that TCS is not the best place for her future education."
"How do you label a child, eight years old, or discriminate against an eight year old child? It just don't happen" said Carroll Thompson.
"Sunnie says, 'I'm a girl, I know I'm a girl' and she said then you know, you're acting like and looking, and wanting to look and act like a boy" said Doris.
An administrator from Timberlake Christian, said the problem with Sunnie goes "far beyond her hair length" and that the little girl is a good student, but that "things disturbed the classroom environment."
"How do you tell a child when she wants to wear pants a shirt, and go out and play in the mud and so forth, how do you tell her, no you can't, you've got to wear a pink bow in your hair, and you've got to let your hair grow out long, how do you do that? I can't do that" said Doris.

Private school. She can go to public school and be a gender fluid and use both bathrooms.

Sorry about that. It's been fixed.

While I'm not defending this, the institution that produced an intellectual and emotional train wreck like you really shouldn't be the bar we set.

Ahhh nice broadside and over generalization.
One small school and you lay judgement on a entire group.
Congrats on your narrow mindedness.

My high school had a dress code in my freshman year requiring girls wear dresses. That was a public high school. This is a private Christian school and the dress code there is not being followed by her or her guardians dressing her. This is an example of a child telling adults how she is going to dress and the adults blaming it on the school instead of themselves.

Clicked the link, she does look rather boyish. Not taking side, just saying.

Toddy I agree this is completely absurd and beyond the pale. And a level headed conservative Christian would also agree.
But you lose any hope of that when you frame this as indicative of an entire set of people. Why do you have to be so antagonistic about it? You'd get a lot more support if you weren't so busy perpetuating your own stereotypes.
And I know I'm not the first to tell you this

This is asinine.
Reminds me of the ludicrous "Zero tolerance" policies seen in many schools across the nation.

She could stand to lose some weight. She looks like a fat little boy
Not that this excuses the school from being quite rude.
But they have the right to be rude. Just as others have the right to call them out on it.

Sounds to me like the school has a bullying problem, and, like good little school administrators are want to do, they decided to get rid of the victim rather than confront the bullies.
Sad.
Sad.

You wouldn't show up at the Rex ball in shorts and a tank top and this school has a dress code that the grandparents agreed to when they registered the child. The grandparents are also breaking Biblical teaching by going to the world (press) and making a story about this.

The school administrators f'd up IMO. They should have just addressed the school dress code issue and said something like "your student continually violates our dress code". Handout the school rules to the parents and simply state, comply or find another school.

What bible verse are you referencing?

So it's ok for them to bully an eight year old child because she doesn't look enough like a girl?

Who are the Christian Right? Why do you think this one private school in Lightmyfart, VA somehow represents or embodies some significant % of non-leftist/proglodytes? Tiresome. Post the story and say these people are ridiculous, fine. But to try to attribute their behavior to some broader undefined group of people with whom think you disagree and are better than is absurd.

The last paragraph states.
This story was written to make the school look like a bully but they aren't. Many Catholic schools also have similar dress codes.
quote:
School administrators said they have not accused Sunnie of being anything or anyone and simply asked that her family follow the guidelines they set forth for all students. The Thompsons say they have no desire to re-enroll Sunnie at Timberlake Christian

What about Rex's balls? Where has he been anyway?

The school basically told the grandparents they weren't raising her in a Christian manner. I'm sure they were really insulted.
I think they should let the girl decide whether or not she wants to change her dress though. If she wants to go back to school so badly, I bet she would.
