Cosmic inflation - extraordinary new evidence to support a Big Bang Theory

Scientists say they have extraordinary new evidence to support a Big Bang Theory for the origin of the Universe.
Researchers believe they have found the signal left in the sky by the super-rapid expansion of space that must have occurred just fractions of a second after everything came into being.
quote:
The aim has been to try to find a residual marker for "inflation" - the idea that the cosmos experienced an exponential growth spurt in its first trillionth, of a trillionth of a trillionth of a second.
The BICEP2 team says it has now identified that signal. Scientists call it B-mode polarisation. It is a characteristic twist in the directional properties of the CMB. Only the gravitational waves moving through the Universe in its inflationary phase could have produced such a marker. It is a true "smoking gun".

The Big Bang Theory is loaded with conjecture. It is the best theory currently available but I, personally, don't put a great deal of stock in it. I also don't believe the Earth is 5,000 years old if you were wondering

This is a fairly substantial discovery that lends quite a bit of validity to the theory.
Here's another article -
quote:
Almost 14 billion years ago, the universe we inhabit burst into existence in an extraordinary event that initiated the Big Bang. In the first fleeting fraction of a second, the universe expanded exponentially, stretching far beyond the view of today's best telescopes. All this, of course, has just been theory.
quote:
Researchers from the BICEP2 collaboration today announced the first direct evidence supporting this theory, known as "cosmic inflation." Their data also represent the first images of gravitational waves, or ripples in space-time. These waves have been described as the "first tremors of the Big Bang." Finally, the data confirm a deep connection between quantum mechanics and general relativity.
"This is really exciting. We have made the first direct image of gravitational waves, or ripples in space-time across the primordial sky, and verified a theory about the creation of the whole universe," said Chao-Lin Kuo, an assistant professor of physics at Stanford and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, and a co-leader of the BICEP2 collaboration.

nice article, but then they put that stupid picture at the bottom:

There are also numerous independent observations that point to a similar age for the universe.

I don't dispute this and believe that all of the evidence we currently have points that way. I also don't know that all of that matter has expanded through space because of one event or Genesis. Aristotle's theory of dynamic motion was accepted as law until Galileo proved him wrong. I happen to believe that we are too arrogant for our own good sometimes and that we should all try to be more objective, elite level physicists included.

You may be surprised at how many religious people don't completely dismiss the big bang theory.

Right I mean who is to say that God did not cause the Big Bang to bring the universe into existence?

I told a teacher that one time and heard crickets. I think the idea of a Big Bang sounds dumb but if it happened it sure doesn't rule out God. I don't think we are talking billions of years ago either.

A lot of people would also be surprised to know that the person that first proposed the Big Bang Theory was a Catholic priest. Fr. Georges Lemaitre. He happened to also be a cosmologist and astrophysicist. He was good friends with Einstein.

No matter what science comes up with you cannot scientifically get to the root of the matter: Who is the creator? Science can explain process very well at times - although what is accepted science differs greatly over time. It cannot explain who or why.

Do you really believe this? The Earth itself is believed to be over 4 billion years old. Do you not believe in the study of geology? I am not saying that any theory is beyond question but I find the age of the Earth much more easily acceptable than the Big Bang Theory. I also want to point out that I don't wholly dount the BB theory I just think that we are really reaching to find the Genesis of the universe and there is a greta deal we don't know.

I believe scientists don't know as much as they think they do. The very fact that you couch this statement as "is believed to be" shows it is not a demonstrable fact. It is a simple belief.

The BB Theory and an "Old Earth" do not contradict each other. As a matter of fact, if I remember correctly, the BBT says that the Earth is billions of years old.

You are 100% correct. They do not contradict one another at all. That still does not give me great faith in the Big Bang Theory. It is the best we have come up with so far and very well could be accurate but I wouldn't bet the house on it.

I try not to be arrogant in any statement I make and always leave the possibility of being wrong open.

Agreed. A theory is a theory is a theory. But...i'd have to say it's a pretty good one.
