I am really intrigued by the idea of using slightly oversized bass tackle to throw Strike King 10xd crankbaits and the 1.5oz Super Traps on braided line with wire leaders in an effort to target red snapper. Has anyone ever done this? Can it be effective? Am I just pissing in the wind? I have caught a couple on butterfly jigs but have never tried crankbaits or other hard baits.

The current means of red snapper fishing (chunk of lead and cut bait on a way over sized offshore rod and a heavy reel) just isn't much of a challenge/that much fun.

A red snapper will chew it up like a peppermint.

This. Your 10XD would explode. Plus you would need some magnum treble hooks

Those people really can't catch fish otherwise. Let them have their fun.

This is just some random internet picture, but snapper have been caught while pulling stretch baits. If they're feeding, not sure why you couldn't catch them on some sort of crankbait.

I think you would have a hard time getting it past the Almaco jacks, mangrove snapper etc at the surface before you could get it down to the snapper. I would think you could sight cast it at red snapper after they follow up one that was hooked further down. I also think a lemon fish would tag it but i doubt it survives more than a few fish. Offshore species are hell on tackle.

It's probably possible, but it would be hell if there's any current and you would have to cast a mile to drag it through the school. Other than that, those frickers will hit anything. I'd say if you're looking for a challenge just butterfly jig on a light rod, I've always gotten the biggest ones on huge jigs.
