That'll go over like a fart in church.

quote:

Join UC Berkeley students, staff, and faculty at the Chevron Auditorium in International House for an address by Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky on the National Security Agency and personal privacy.

That just doesn't seem right. Like mixing oil and water.

ETA: I know Chevron is based out of San Ramon, CA, thus it's affiliation with UC Barkeley.

You gotta give Paul credit. He's not just giving lip service to minority and youth outreach, he's actually doing it. I think his views on foreign policy, the war on drugs, drone use and domestic spying will probably go over pretty well there. Check out what MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell had to say about him last night:

Paul has learned a lot from his father.

He will have by far the widest base of the political spectrum in both the primaries and general election.

Today Paul goes into the belly of the beast. Does anyone know if we'll be able to watch it live somewhere?

You know that's where we developed most of our nukes, right?

Rand got himself a California burger on Monday. (Wonder who's going to eat that other one.)

He cherry picked the topic for this audience. He is very pro-privacy, which should actually play well with this crowd.

I will be interested to see what he says and how "far" he goes. I am intrigued by Paul but I am not a libertarian (though I appreciate many of their concerns and share some positions) and I also believe in a stronger foreign policy role than Paul's father (and probably than Rand, himself).

He'll reach a few, but I imagine any message of responsibility and self-reliance will be met with some hostility there.

It will be hard to change things in the GOP without trying to reach young people. He's got to try.

San Francisco Chronicle headline:

Republican Rand Paul fires up a Berkeley Crowd

Oakland Tribune headline:

Rand Paul, Republican presidential hopeful, finds support in Berkeley, of all places

The Daily Californian (Berkeley school newspaper) headline:

Rand Paul discusses domestic spying and privacy rights at Berkeley Forum event

And then there's the predictable.

Here's FOX News' headline:

Rand Paul rebukes Obama over spying in Berkeley speech

And of course there's The Washington Post's Jennifer Rubin's headline:

Rand Paul panders at Berkeley

I guess Paul has replaced Chuck Hagel as #1 on Rubin's hit list.

EDIT: Rubin proves my point that when Paul runs for President, he will be attacked more from the right than from the left. If he gets the nomination, don't be surprised if some of the neocons endorse Hillary over Paul.

Paul just got a lot of praise on Chris Matthews' show today, with Mark Halperin calling him a GOP prophet, but he said that he still thinks the establishment is too afraid of him to let him win the nomination.

EDIT: Even Democratic lockstepper Eugene Robinson grudgingly praised Paul's speech.
