Don Henley. 1984. Reached #5 on the charts.

Rolling Stone ranked it the #416 of the top 500 songs of all time.

I heard it yesterday in a coffee shop and I just stopped what I was doing and listened. I was a kid when it came out. It is one of the few songs that I hear that really evokes some emotion from the past.

It just seems kind of underrated. It evokes that side of 80's culture that is often forgotten. Wayfayers. Leather jackets. Convertables. The beach. You see it in Top Gun in 86 and Footloose. Lots of retro stuff going on during that time period.

That song seemed to capture all of that.

Thoughts?

As a guy who was barely a teenager in 84, I think its a great song.

I think it's awesome. Really captured a mood, brings back specific memories of my life at that time.

Was a good pop song from a pretty good album. I happened to see Henley on his tour that followed. Had a good band with him. Even better, Robert Plant opened for him. Seriously.

I don't know anyone who underrates that song.

It's a classic and one of the shining singles from the decade.

Near the top as far as the hits go. The music came from Mike Campbell, he pitched it to Petty-who passed. Hooked up with Henley and the rest was history.

Both the Henley original and the Ataris cover are fantastic.

My favorite Don Henley song. I always want to hear it when driving across I-10 on the way to Florida vacation.

Pretty fricking low.

When the highlight of a song is a reference to Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac, you know you have a problem.

"The End of the Innocence."

Written for Dana Delany when she and Henley were living together.

The song depresses the hell out of me. It always reminds me of my last two high school years. The song was new and popular my junior year of high school. My girlfriend and all of my best friends were a year above me. We enjoyed the hell out of the summer and then they all moved away to college. I was left in a small to midsized, boring town finishing up my last year of high school with not much to do.

I remember helping saying goodbye to some of best friends as they were heading to Michigan and Western Michigan for college. They were all excited about starting a new chapter in their lives and getting the hell out of Burton, Michigan. That same day I went to the then girlfriend's house and helped pack up her 1980 Ford Fiesta (who remembers that model :lol). She was heading off to the dreaded Michigan State. I knew the relationship wasn't going to last much longer. I said goodbye and headed home - the long way...driving around Thread Lake. This song always makes me think of that time.

Long story short...the song brings up bad memories and therefore I don't particularly care for it.
