Where Does "Boys of Summer" Rate In Pantheon of 80's Songs?

Don Henley. 1984. Reached #5 on the charts.
Rolling Stone ranked it the #416 of the top 500 songs of all time.
I heard it yesterday in a coffee shop and I just stopped what I was doing and listened. I was a kid when it came out. It is one of the few songs that I hear that really evokes some emotion from the past.
It just seems kind of underrated. It evokes that side of 80's culture that is often forgotten. Wayfayers. Leather jackets. Convertables. The beach. You see it in Top Gun in 86 and Footloose. Lots of retro stuff going on during that time period.
That song seemed to capture all of that.
Thoughts?

As a guy who was barely a teenager in 84, I think its a great song.

I think it's awesome. Really captured a mood, brings back specific memories of my life at that time.

I wasn't a teenager yet then either. My memories of it came later in the late 80's, early 90's, and I kept thinking that it was just a great song.
Just downloaded the Ataris 2003 version, which I actually kind of like better. But, probably just because it reminds me of the original.

Ataris' cover is better IMO

Jam On It by Newcleus was my 80's watershed tune.

Still holds up well but I think that Dirty Laundry is the Don Henley song that's more fitting today than it was when it was released.

Was a good pop song from a pretty good album. I happened to see Henley on his tour that followed. Had a good band with him. Even better, Robert Plant opened for him. Seriously.

I don't know anyone who underrates that song.
It's a classic and one of the shining singles from the decade.

Near the top as far as the hits go. The music came from Mike Campbell, he pitched it to Petty-who passed. Hooked up with Henley and the rest was history.

When I smoked my first cigarette, that song was playing. To this day, even though I quit four years ago, I still have that urge for a smoke whenever I hear that song. I remember almost everything about that cigarette.

My first cigarette was from a Kool softpack.
Thankfully, no song was playing at the time that would later cause me a want to smoke another of those cigarettes today.

Absolutely a great cover.
but, a dead head sticker > black flag sticker.

Was 13 when it was on the radio, which is right at the time I was really getting into rock for the first time. A friend of mine had the cassette and we played that song and Sunset Grill almost non-stop. I had no idea at the time what a Deadhead sticker was.
And as much as I am a fan of cool covers, I can't stand the Atari's version. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard to my ears.

Captured a great mood in the studio. Fantastically produced. Emotional song. Such good. Wow.

Both the Henley original and the Ataris cover are fantastic.

My favorite Don Henley song. I always want to hear it when driving across I-10 on the way to Florida vacation.

Yeah, it is on my summer song list, for sure.

"Sunset Grill"
Very underrated song. That song in particular brings back great memories as I was 10 when it came out. Boys of Summer was very good too. Speaking of Sunset Grill, I went by THE Sunset Grill on Sunset Blvd which is the grill the song is named after.
P.S. Those two songs are examples of what made 80s music so unique and great imho. It was a time period with incredible diversity of music. You had a lot of solo acts from great bands along with a lot of the legendary bands still around.
