For so many years, we've had to watch veteran players shown way too much deference by the FO.
All the while, their cap hits continued to grow out of proportion with their declining production.

Even the most unbending defenders of Payton and Loomis will admit that one of their biggest weaknesses come from holding onto veterans who bring leadership but take up too much room on the roster and cap.

What's happening now is difficult to be sure, but it's simply the only way to continue our success, which we've maintained for a pretty long time.
Belichick is the king of cutting beloved players who can't produce up to necessary levels.
It's time to get younger and faster, with small rookie contracts to boot.

Damn, it's nice to see a veteran coach like Payton still willing to learn and change and make difficult decisions for the better.

You will have a difficult time convincing people of that.

But, I am on board with all of these cuts. Excited to see what happens

It's not the only way, just a better way for long-term success. Im sure the team could have a successful 2014 season without the adjustments

Exactly and I have said as much a few times already. Payton has finally had it click that loyalty will eventually get you killed on the cap and in the end you can't keep everyone forever.

He has finally become Belichick.

I said all season that Payton has been evaluating talent and strategizing.

Now we're seeing what he's been working on for 2 years.

We were too slow and too predictable on offense this year. Payton knows that and he needs young fast guys to mold into his playbook. Unless we give all of this work to Jimmy's pocketbook, next season should be a hell of alot of fun

It's like when Smith got hurt last year. I was super excited to see Junior playing more, figuring he would make more mental mistakes (he ended up with much better gap integrity than Smith has ever had) and more big plays (obviously was the case). I think we're going to see that next season. Ingram and Khiry aren't going to be as smart blocking rushers/recognizing the blitz as Sproles and PT, but I think that they're going to provide some more big plays and do a good job wearing down defenses as the game goes on. Whichever youngin replaces Moore may not have the chemistry early on that he had with Brees in settling into zones, but newbie will be much more effective making plays once they have the ball in their hands and probably do a better job getting open in man coverage. A rookie center could have some growing pains, but will almost certainly be more physical than DLP.

I can see kind of an inverse of last season: an ugly loss or two early on while we develop chemistry, but finishing on a really strong note. Hopefully we get an easy schedule early on. The AFCN is getting pretty ugly and those should all be done by week 8 or so, which is good.

I for one, got revitalized in my saints fandom and excitement today.

We coulda sat on drew and all these vets for the rest of his career and made a couple of playoff birth but we would have never gotten back close to a SB

This shows the determination to win the big one.

AND now this offseason is going to be exciting as hell

The main problem is that he waited a couple of years too long, and now all of the sudden, it seems drastic, when in actuality, like 2 or 3 of these guys were just coming up on their time.
