I think I'll be okay on sports for the most part, with my parents Watch ESPN.

I will miss Braves games on Sportsouth, but maybe I can find a way to get those.

I just have the main living room TV, and a small TV in the bar/breakfast room that only gets turned on when I'm cooking and I want some noise, so I'll probably just buy the Roku stick for it so I can get Pandora on it

I'm trying to get my parents to give me their info for WatchESPN, but for some reason they think they will get in trouble, so they are hesitant

Yea, my mac isn't even a year old. So with Apple TV I could sync the two and use my laptop basically just as a keyboard for a 50 inch monitor?

Yeah. But let's just make this clear:
The difference between the AppleTV and your HDMI cord is literally nothing except that there will be occasional lag in what you do on the laptop and what you see on the screen (you go from a 10GB/sec signal directly to the TV to probably a 300mbps signal to the router, then a 300mbps signal back to the ATV, assuming you use no cables. If your ATV is hooked up to your router, you'll get better reliability. I'm almost certain you're not plugging both devices into a router, so your signal is still going to cap at about 300mbps + chance of interference). You add nothing. You do take away the cable running on the floor (or in the air...I DON'T KNOW YOUR LIFE).

TL;DR, the ATV removes the cable from the floor and adds nothing to what you already do.

Edited the word "quality" to "reliability"

so I signed up with Plex last night so I'm still trying to figure out if I need Chromecast or Roku now with Plex, I can watch movies and TV shows that are on my computer on my TV I have all Netflix, Prime, Hulu, etc apps on my TV already do I need Chromecast or Roku? What would they offer that I can't get from my smart TV and Plex?

Salmon, if you have a smart TV, you don't need a Roku or Chromecast. They convert an old, dumbass TV (with an HDMI port) to a smart TV that can do what your smart TV is now doing. If you find your library doesn't have everything you need, what you now need to do is read up on using Sick Beard and Newsgroups together. If you want to go that route, I've heard that these are good, though I definitely don't use them....
1. Newsbin Pro to use with a Usenet.net subscription.
2. The free program, Sick Beard.
3. NZBClub for movies, even Brazzers as I've seen posted, even though I have no idea what that is.

I cut cable almost 2 years ago, and watch more programming now than with my $93/month DirecTv package(with $250 startup cost). The cost is $35 one time (I think that was the price) for Newsbin, $130 one time computer cost ($65 machine, $65 HDD), and then $21/month for Usenet/Netflix.

So.... $250 and then $93/month vs. $165 and then $21 per month. It's a little more hands on, you definitely pay for ease of use.

The HD Homerun thing, is that a stand alone unit or does it have to connect to your computer as well?

I'm not sure, I assumed so. DirectTV works for NBC sports app, I assumed it would.

3 plugs:
1) power
2) ethernet
3) antenna/cable input

It puts the tuner on your network. You can "pull" it in over your WiFi. You do need at least Wireless N for optimal results. "G" doesn't really cut it.

I'm not really sure what I have, I'll have to look into this.

So the benefit of this would be, you could watch TV from separate rooms with one antenna, through the network?

Save me on an antenna, basically?

Yes, but it's going to cost you a DLNA device at each viewing station (many SmartTVs are qualified already). Android devices have an app, i think. Here's their website. I'll probably be able to answer any questions you have about it later. A little busy for the next few hours. You need either the Prime (3 tuners) or HDHR-4 (2 tuners) for this feature.

ETA: I'm about to buy one because where my antenna is downstairs (indoor) doesn't get good enough reception for many OTA channels that are available upstairs.

I am going to buy an antenna tomorrow to demonstrate to my wife that we don't have to have cable to watch the news

I have been reading on the Homerun thing, seems like it also can be used as an OTA DVR also?

With the little one on the way, just be sure you have some mickey mouse cartoons downloaded or readily available. Our little girl is 3 months old and will sit in amazement watching mickey mouse.

Caveat- Along with a computer. Windows Media Center is probably the best option. It works with Macs and Linux boxes as well. You need storage space though- about 5gb/hour of HDTV. Still, even a laptop (which will have to be always on the network/able to be woken up/on) and an external hard drive can do this.

My house isn't that big to have that many TV's. I have a TV in the garage that I'll turn on from time to time, and one in the bedroom....guess I'll need an extra antenna for those.

I used the existing coax in my house and a $3 splitter from wal-mart to connect 1 antenna to operate all of the tv's in my house. It's really easy to do.

Now the nanny is probably going to get frustrated that she won't be able to just turn on Disney Jr, but there are plenty of kid shows on Netflix and Hulu as well, just requires an extra step

If you have somebody's cable password there is a Disney & Disney Jr app on Roku.
