We have the traditional 7 tvs (4 bed rooms, living, game and outside), plus 4 laptops, 2 kindles, iPad, xbox360, xbone, Wii and all our phones. It is actually ridiculous. I think I can get Netflix built in on about 14 devices including the smart tvs and DVD players, Xbox's and tablets. So streaming is not an issue...it is easily getting to live sports and such without having to train the family to launch a space shuttle.

I only pay 200 total for cable, phone, internet, 3 dvrs... Almost all the channels.

Then you start dealing with data limits. Yes, Cox did send us an email a few times telling us we hit the 250gb limit. What do y'all do about that?

I am about to buy a subscription now. If I have $9 drafted each month, no contract or anything, I'll just enter the gift card and it will give me a credit. Correct?

If you're talking about Netflix, before you do that, you should probably take the 1-month free trial that they (usually) offer.

Also, I'd consider adding the DVD feature if you're dropping cable if you don't want to occasionally buy DVDs and build a collection or frequent Red Box or the like. Sometimes the movie selection is lacking.

I feel ya.

I am all in, my wife won't even discuss it. We don't even watch much TV but she thinks that we will be doing without.

I think people (myself included) forgot that you can actually get content over the air.

Again, if you're not an OnDemand user, you should consider an HDHomerun Prime system (or the Ceton InfiniTV 6eth which has 6 tuners). You drop the charge for the boxes and DVRs each month, still pull the HD stuff and all the channels. You lose the OnDemand features, but you can still watch on any DLNA device.

Also, anyone who does not subscribe to a DVR service but does have the cable box or is considering adding a second cable box, check out this which replaces your Cox Box (or any other box). You still pay for the cablecard ($1-2/mo), but they don't charge you the $7-10/mo for the box. So it's about a 12-month payoff with the savings starting after that. It also takes the place of your Roku/ATV/Chromecast/etc.

I shed cable about a year ago and haven't checked up. Have netflix and brazzers. All I really think I need.

Question, I just plug an Hdmi cable up to my tv from mac and watch everything that way. What would be the best device to buy that would let me have the same effect (Netflix/brazzers/etc) that's automatically hooked up to the tv? I know nothing about all this. Apple TV?

My wife is kinda the same way, but she doesn't even realize how little live TV we actually watch.

Most nights we usually just put Pandora on the TV while playing with our daughter, and once she is in bed, watch a show or movie on Netflix. I don't think we have turned on DirectTV in a week.

Now the nanny is probably going to get frustrated that she won't be able to just turn on Disney Jr, but there are plenty of kid shows on Netflix and Hulu as well, just requires an extra step

That's what I do. I looked a bunch of other options mentioned in here and decided plugging in my laptop was the cheapest and easiest. I did buy a Mohu leaf antenna to get better reception on over the air channels

So with Apple TV I'll be able to have a netflix app? Also be able to go to safari and look up things online?

Depending on how old your Mac is (seem to remember it being new enough), you can mirror directly to an AppleTV over the WiFi. Roku may have a Brazzers app. I'll let you Google that one (not going to do that at work). Roku would be the cheaper and more feature-filled option. I don't know about any of the other appliances (many have web browsers in them, like the Sony Google TV, Logitech Revue), but most of those are slightly more expensive. AppleTV is the only one currently that will let you view anything you look at just like you had your HDMI cable plugged in.

Exactly, for me...its not a major issue, but for her, she thinks we have to have it. She watches the Today show before work and thinks she will lose that....we have been trained to think the only TV is what you pay for.

My only concern is the hoops you have to jump through to watch online stuff.....she wouldn't have the patience to try and find stuff and shoot it from the iPad to the apple tv.

Yes and no. There's no Safari App on the the AppleTV. You'll literally just be using your laptop and have your TV = second monitor showing the exact same thing that's in front of you.

Yea, my mac isn't even a year old. So with Apple TV I could sync the two and use my laptop basically just as a keyboard for a 50 inch monitor?

My house isn't that big to have that many TV's. I have a TV in the garage that I'll turn on from time to time, and one in the bedroom....guess I'll need an extra antenna for those.
