Why are CCPs So Expensive in Mississippi?

$132 for the initial application.
$82 for each renewal.
Obviously this doesn't take into account the cost of an NRA class to earn an enhanced carry sticker.
Seems excessive for a poor state like MS.

Highway Patrol's gotta make that money.

It's more expensive in Louisiana than that. I agree that it's borderline criminal for them to make you pay money to exercise a constitutional right.

What do you think of this article, Bapple?
I don't necessarily support the viewpoint. Just found it while researching Mississippi CCP fees.

I don't think it's that expensive, and renewal isn't for five years after your first issuance.
It's not that bad.

$132 for the "right" to carry concealed when open carry is free?
Think of the cost relative to the average Mississippian... especially the type of person who lives in an area where it's probably needed most. I'm thinking that person is just going to carry illegally rather than go through the expense... or even worse, not carry at all.

I agree that it's rather silly.

I agree with you. I'm only speaking for myself.
Very interesting article.

Any guesses as to why CCP fees in the South are higher than other regions of the country?
For comparison, fees in AZ and OK are only $60.

But when Mississippi tried to charge citizens for the "right" to vote, the federal government sent troops in.

I don't know if the entire thing is correct but it does seem like permits are unattainable to some by legislative design.
If it was about your income level, wouldn't they provide some sort of welfare for poorer people to get permits? Or wouldn't they charge more for people with higher income if it were based on something like taxes? This is where I think the baseline price is messed up.
I also wonder where the $100+ dollars I pay are going. Who is getting paid for my right to carry? It's basically as if someone else is making money off of me. But I can't complain about it to an authority figure or they will take away my "privilege." This is the problem I have with them charging a fee.
So to answer your question, I don't know if there are racists roots or anything in regards to the price but I don't agree with it at all.

Strange because Mississippi's annual car tag fee works this way. The more expensive and newer your car, the more you pay for your tag.
And compared to LA, MS's car tag fee is outrageous. At least we can sort of see where the money is going for that, though, when I drive into Louisiana from Mississippi.

No offense to anybody who has posted, but every time I think I can't be surprised by unsophisticated, silly high-drama threads on this board -- I seem to run across one like this.
Nobody makes you pay money in Mississippi or in Louisiana to open-carry. You get to exercise that constitutional right for free. But if you want the added convenience of carrying concealed, you pay a fee for that privilege.
You can walk down almost any road in the state (maybe not the interstate highways). If you want the convenience of riding down those roads on a bus or in a car, you pay for that privilege.

And every time somebody wants too complain about allegedly discriminatory treatment of various ethnic groups, somebody always seems to play the race card.
If you want "poor people" to be able to pack, why don't we just buy guns for them. The government already buys phones, food, housing and mass transit for "the disadvantaged." Hell, let buy a few million handguns, a few million AR's and about 500,000 shotguns and just hand 'em out.
That oughta make the bleeding heart liberals all warm and fuzzy, and should create job security for every law enforcement officers all over Mississippi & Louisiana.

Just so you know, the distinction between "right" and "privilege" is largely irrelevant.
Posted on 3/1/14 at 8:35 pm to dawg23
Its not a privelge to carry concealed. It is a Right. Govt forces youto pay for that right so that they can pay for various Govt programs. You dont pay to keep from being illegally searched. You shouldnt have to pay to carry a firearm, open or concealed.

IMO one should have the right and privilege to carry concealed without the govt mandated "class" and fees, but that's probably just me taking for granted that I have good working knowledge of how to operate, shoot, and defend myself through different defensive training and hours of practice.

FWIW, MS doesn't mandate a class to apply for a permit (just for the enhanced carry).
LA is insane with those fees and extra mandates.

So the fact that it isn't visible changes it from a right to a privilege? Get over yourself man.
