"I can cook"

When someone says this, what are your expectations. Obviously preparing a box of macaroni and cheese takes some kind of effort, but anyone can do it. I can cook a good rice and gravy, but it isn't very hard.
Just wanted to get the FDB's opinion.

It means one can consistently execute dishes that taste good.

Depends on the person, tbh. I always tell people I can cook, but not very well. I know how to throw things together based upon what I have on hand to make a pretty good and preferably healthy meal, but if you want me to cook some gourmet meal you'd be sadly disappointed. And I would bet that's what the average person means when they say "I can cook".

I wouldn't expect that to mean you are a gourmet chef but at the same time I would expect you to be able to prepare several different types of meals well and show some technique to your cooking

I expect you to be able to cook at least as good as myself.

That's not true. I know someone who screwed this up every time.

I make good blue box Mac and Cheese.
Don't believe what these food snobs say. That kit hen fire was an accident and no has ever proven a thing about that food poisoning rumor.

Don't know about anyone else, but I don't really consider making a box of mac n cheese "cooking".
Heating something in the microwave is one step removed from that.
"Cooking" encompasses a lot of different areas..maybe you're just great at desserts or breakfast or grilling or BBQ, but all those things require some basic knowledge that goes beyond boiling water.
As long as you have some basic skills that u can utilize in some way with the right ingredients to make a decent meal of some sort, then, yeah you can cook.

Well I just put two pieces of sourdough bread together with some gruyere cheese and sliced apples and "cooked" my daughter and myself a grilled cheese.
When finished she cooked a bowl of Lucky Charms and 2% milk. Apparently I didn't cook enough for her.

My first impression is they can cook, and until I hear recipes with cream of this and that and they prove otherwise, I thend to want to give them the benefit of the doubt.
Then again, I am pretty skeptical of that simply for the amazing number of people who think putting a bunch of prepackaged and pre cooked stuff other people cooked in a pot and heating it up constitutes them cooking food.

I generally think they have an idea what they're doing, maybe know some terminology, but I reserve all judgement til I taste their wares. I've had plenty of people tell they could cook, and couldn't.

A friend of mine went to dinner at another friend's. The host said she was "cooking" dinner. That was already suspect because she doesn't really cook. The potatoes came right out of the can. I don't think I've ever had a canned potato.

I've had a canned potato. My father loved them and would put a can in green beans. Different but not as bad as some canned stuff.

I think I'll wait until I have no choice but to eat a canned potato to try one. I hope that day never comes. I will eat some canned veggies, but canned potatoes creep me out.

Depends on how they say it,
I don't cook all that well so I'd say "I CAN cook"
But if you're really good you might say "I can COOK"

I always wonder this to myself. I can cook a good amount of dishes, but it's not an extensive list. I can pick a recipe from a book and usually make it pretty well.
Also, I grill a lot. But that's easy. I don't really consider that being able to cook. But many do.
