I'm sure the employees have other responsibilities that don't involve pace of play, that is what marshalls are for.

That was kind of a function of how I'd rank the courses, too. Keep that in mind.

i have always had a soft spot for webb
i don't think 30 bucks is ridiculous at all for a weekend round considering its location in terms of convenience
also, say what you want, but the last couple of seasons its been it pretty damn good shape
you could actually tell the fairway from the rough last summer

I haven't played Webb since I was in college I think. So I admit my perception of it is outdated. I would definitely play it though.

there are a couple practice ranges in FL that charge $30 just to practice.

And they can go frick themselves.

GS charges 15 bucks for the first bag of balls to public to keep the Denham riffraff out

What should the employees be doing to help pace of play?
Their job? Most of the time, the people I see bullshitting in the clubhouse.... marshals
I would love for courses to clock players. Too slow? Speed it up. In fact, if I knew a course was very strict on pace of play, I would move them to the top of my preference list.
Golf should not take 4.5-5 hours.

i see this complaint in every golf thread....but i play many of the courses around BR, and i play twice a week on average....and I almost NEVER play a round that takes more than 4 hours
this includes playing in a 5-some pretty often too and behind other 5somes on weekends
eta: i know that it does happen, but its far far from the norm

There are only 2 courses I worry about pace of play, Santa Maria and Webb.
Posted on 2/27/14 at 8:35 am to iheartlsu
I don't play nearly as often as you guys, but when we do play at courses like Beaver or Copper it feels like our rounds are right around 3-3.5 hours. Those courses aren't usually at capacity anyway.

You'd think supply and demand would work. If people aren't playing, lower your price.
You'd think that. Baton Rouge has always had a problem with greens fees, in my opinion. Having played a variety of courses, I want to feel that I got my moneys worth out of the course.
Back in school, I'd play the LSU course a ton. As a student, $14 w/cart for 18 holes. Now, LSU isn't the nicest course but far from a poor course, and it could get stupid slow, but $14 is hard to beat.
Webb during the week was like $25, on Fridays it was over $30. The course conditions are typically poor, its always overcrowded, and the marshalls are worthless.
I have no issue paying $30-$40 for Santa Maria. I dont have an issue paying $75 to play the UC. Hell, I'll pay $45 to play Carter Plantation all day every day. I love that course and thats a great value.
The reality of it is the recession has left people with less disposable income. Lowering greens fees doesnt necessarily guarantee enough revenue to keep the sprinklers on.
It's more of a case where the cost and layout of the course dictates a certain greens fee. If the quality of the layout doesn't mesh with the greens fee, no one will play it. Even lowering the rate doesn't mean more people will play. A bad layout is a bad layout.

When is the last time you played Webb?
Posted on 2/27/14 at 9:14 am to Croacka
I think Webb is a $20 course, cart included. Sure they have given more attention to the course over the past few years, but it's still Webb. It's not worth $30 to me, and the other courses are a 30 minute drive away.
When faced with those options, I decide to do something else.

Did you somehow misread those two simple statements? I'm not going to pay $30 to play Webb.
Yep. Thought you were saying it was cheap.

I see how you could have read it that way.

if webb was 20 bucks in the summer, it would be unplayable
winter golf is not too popular down here and i think courses don't do enough to lower rates during the winter to make it at least a bit more enticing to golfers
demand in the summer =/= demand in the winter
so why not price it more accordingly

assuming the number of players would increase if only $20

Probably too many players.
