Question Related to LSU ULL Baseball Game
Posted on 2/26/14 at 7:14 am

Can someone explain to me why everyone is saying the score was 4-1? Looking at the box score it looks like ULL scored in the top of the sixth which is when the game was called off. The game should revert back to the last completed inning and should have been 3-1. Obviously, it doesn't matter, we lost, but I'm just curious what the thought process behind that is.

Mainieri had to have offered the run.

Because I'm curious about why they did something that goes against conventional baseball rules? Nice try.

Been wondering that myself. One team gets an extra inning, not how it works.
Once it gets reported one time, everyone will just run the reported score.

You know, sometimes the home team doesn't play a full 9 innings? Yep, and still, whatever runs the visiting team scored in the top half on the inning are counted.
Convention is weird.

It didn't revert back to the previous inning because there was no lead change.

Is this really in the rule book somewhere or did you just pull it out your arse?

I love when someone who obviously doesn't have a fricking clue what the hell they are talking about tries to speak up and be a sarcastic dick.
Here's a lesson for you.
In the event a game is called due to rain in the top of the 6th inning. The game revert back to the 5th inning. Stats accumulated in that inning don't count.
If a game gets called in the middle of the 6th and the home team is winning, the game is over after the top of the 6th.
If a game gets called in the bottom of the 6th inning and the home team is losing, the game reverts back to the 5th inning.

This must be a college rule because this is 100% irrelevant in MLB. A game called in the middle of an inning goes back to the last inning.

It should be 3-1 since the final was a 5 inning game.

Correct. That's what I am asking in my OP. The score says it was 4-1 final/5. It can't be a final in 5 if the score was 4-1.
Someone said in the another thread that in college the normal rule doesn't apply if the home team is losing. Makes absolutely no sense, but he usually knows what he is talking about.

Found this on the NCAA website. It's on page 4 in the link

a. If a regulation game is called, include the record of all individual and team actions up to the moment the game ends as specified in Rule 5-8-b.
A.R. 1—If the scoring during an incomplete inning has no bearing on the outcome of the contest, include all individual and team records.

Interesting rule for NCAA. Definitely different than MLB. Sometimes the differences in rules between MLB and NCAA are interesting.

Same thing happened in a game in 2011 between Arkansas and Kentucky. They originally had the wrong final score and had to go back and change everything. In that instance they were in the bottom of the inning with the home team UK trailing and batting with 2 outs. Arkansas had scored 1 in the top half of that inning and it all counted despite the last out of the 6th not being made.

So obviously that is a legit rule then and they always follow score it that way. That's bizarre.
All that did in that situation was piss the pitcher off because his ERA went up

I'm obsessive about baseball rules and scoring, so I'm pretty pissed at myself that I didn't know this rule.
I just emailed the MLB about this rule, so I'll let you know what they come back with. I won't feel better unless they respond and let me know that the MLB reverts back to the previous inning. I cannot find this situation addressed anywhere in the MLB rules or scorekeeping guidelines.
