Thanks for the advice. As a contracted cadet with the Army ROTC, employing deadly force in order to protect myself or those around me is a responsibility I accepted before I signed my contract, though I hope that I never have to use it. Since I have to apply for my WCL back in my home county in GA, it will probably be about 5 months before I start carrying. My parents have offered to pay for me to take defensive carry classes which I'm pretty excited about. Since I don't need to do the 9 hours required by LA to get my license, I've been looking around for classes that offer more hands on training with less classroom time around Baton Rouge.
I understand that you can't have it all in looking for an all-around pistol, and in this case I've chosen to sacrifice on concealability. I still can't help but think that the Sig is a much more practical firearm than the 1911, but they both have their definite advantages.

I am a certified instructor in LA and would go shooting with you one day and teach you a thing or two if you're interested. Obviously I wouldn't be able to teach you CCW here since you aren't a resident but you seem to have that under control.

The de-cocking aspect of the Sig is the one single selling factor that should move you towards the 229. I have never felt comfortable with the thought of having a "cocked and locked" 1911 around and I have a friend that was shot with a supposed safe 1911 that was in that condition.
There is a reason that the vast majority of military and police depts use non-1911 type weapons. Also you can't have enough training and practice when it comes to handling a firearm.

You are welcome to your opinion, but a cocked and locked 1911 is perfectly safe. Millions of people have carried them in this condition with no problems.
A local police department told me they never carried them not because they were unsafe, but because the 'image' of a cocked firearm on the hip. Glocks are much easier to have an AD but most forces carry them because they are cheaper and the average trainee dullard can be taught to simply pull a trigger.
US military used the 1911 for decades. USMC recently went back to the platform.

The main issue with a 1911 for carry or any pistol with a ext safety is that it takes lots of training to become proficient at drawing and deactivating the safety.
I've taken a few training classes with a 1911 for shits and giggles, and it's crazy what your body forgets to do under stress. It's definitely been an inner struggle with me with which platform I should use. I love the 1911, but the simplicity of a glock or m&p is hard to argue with.

I understand that with proper training and care that carrying a 1911 is safe. I would not consider purchasing a firearm that would give me doubt about it's safety. That being said, I still believe that the p229 is the safer option. I also believe that should a life or death situation arise, the odds of putting effective rounds down range is much higher with the controllability and capacity of the 9mm over the .45.

Between the two guns you're looking at, I'd go w/ the 1911. Personally, I prefer a SAO over a SA/DA gun. As far as weight, they're pretty close. Recoil wise, the 9mm does recoil less than the 45, but the 45 is still manageable, especially w/ sufficient training. 9mm ammo is also a little cheaper than 45. I get the feeling you'll prolly end up w/ a second/different gun for concealed carry some months down the road. In the meantime, the 1911 is hard to beat as a range gun. Even though the SA has an aluminum frame, it's highly unlikely it won't stand up to the rigors of a range gun.
If you do end up cc the 1911, be SURE to get adequate training w/ it's manual of arms as it is more complicated than DAO. I guess it's just me, but the manual of amrs for DA/SA/decockers guns is confusing.

To say a glock is safer than a 1911 is ludicrous. Glocks and other polymers are cheap , that's why LE agencies use them.
Check the safety record of the 1911 as compared to glocks. Also pay attention timeline as the the 1911 has been around a century and likely has less self caused injuries then the glock. The 1911 is still in service. The mil have high safety standards for pistols, hence no glock will be adopted.

I'd say in terms of safety they are equal (more "safeties" does not necessarily mean "safer"). If you're dumb enough to keep your finger on the trigger and disregard safety rules, something bad will eventually happen, regardless of the firearm. There's no substitute for training.
I'm not calling you out specifically. Just making a point - a manual safety should never be a crutch for poor gun handling.

I know the OP specified two guns but I'm surprised no one has tried to talk him outta that circa 80-90s gun and into a sexy polymer... Higher cap, less weight, cheaper.... Hmmmm....
