Go back and watch the very first scene of episode 1. In film and television there's a phrase "Up nats full." Nats is short for natural sound, which is anything that's not a direct voice recording.

The director goes up nats full on the lighter flick before we ever see the flames. This is what I mean by highlighting the sound. The lighter is heard but never seen.

Then seconds later in the interrogation room, Rust holds up a lighter and shows it to the detectives who asked him not to smoke. Then he flicks it and it makes the same sound that we just heard in the cane field.

17 year old zippo. I lose them within 5 years. Totally unbelievable. That's Decateur level shite. Ties, shirts, and now lighters.

Every lighter in the world sounds roughly the same.

I haven't watched E01 in a few weeks, but my recollection is that after the first scene of the killer bringing the body/sack to the tree in the cane field and lighting the field on fire, the very next scene is of Hart being interviewed. THEN they show Cohle lighting up and being interviewed (even though, chronologically, Rust was interviewed less than a week before Hart).
